More than 400 students to graduate at BHSU spring commencement ceremony

           More than 400 graduation candidates will be recognized during Black Hills State University&rsquos 169th Commencement Ceremony at 10 a.m., Saturday May 9 at the Donald E. Young Sports &amp Fitness Center on the BHSU campus.



More than 400 candidates for graduation will be recognized during the 169th Black Hills State University Commencement Ceremony.

The spring commencement ceremony is at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 9 at the Donald E. Young Sports and Fitness Center on the BHSU campus. The public is invited to join and celebrate the students&rsquo achievements. Degrees to be awarded include 93 master&rsquos degrees, 293 bachelor&rsquos degrees, and 25 associate&rsquos degrees.

The commencement processional will be led with the University mace, carried by Jace DeCory, assistant professor of history and American Indian studies at BHSU and the 2014 Distinguished Faculty Member. DeCory is also this year&rsquos keynote speaker. She has been a faculty member at BHSU since 1984, devoting her career to the advancement of American Indian studies culture inside and outside the classroom.

Dr. Rod Custer, provost and vice president of academic affairs at BHSU, and John Bastian of the South Dakota Board of Regents, will offer separate greetings to the graduates. BHSU President Tom Jackson, Jr., with the assistance of April Meeker, registrar at BHSU, will present the diplomas to the graduation candidates.

BHSU alum Michael Shann, will be presented an Honorary Doctorate of Public Service degree. Shann is honored for his outstanding accomplishments in the entertainment industry, which includes producing the closing ceremony of the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games.

Dr. Nicholas Wallerstein, professor English at BHSU, will be honored with the 2015 Distinguished Faculty Award during the commencement ceremony. Wallerstein has been a BHSU faculty member since 1997.

BHSU retiring faculty will be honored during the ceremony. Those that will be present include Dr. Ahrar Ahmad, professor of political science Dr. C. Gregory Cooch, professor of special education Dr. James Hesson, professor of exercise science Dr. Kathleen Parrow, professor of history and Dr. David Wolff, professor of history and dean of the College of Liberal Arts.

Julie Benedict, president of the BHSU Alumni Association, will welcome the graduates into the Alumni Association.

The National Anthem, along with special music "Finale" and "Hymn to BHSU," will be performed by the BHSU Chamber Singers under the direction of Dr. Jonathan Nero, associate professor of music at BHSU. The recessional will be performed by Dr. Symeon Waseen and Dr. Christopher Hahn, assistant professors of music at BHSU.

The spring 2015 Commencement Ceremony will be broadcast live at for those who are unable to attend. BHSU encourages attendees to share their commencement story on social media with the hashtag #BHSU2015 in Twitter, Facebook and Instagram posts.
