The Black Hills State University community mourns the loss of Gage McSpadden, 21, a senior distance runner on the cross country and track &amp field teams.

McSpadden, majoring in psychology, was airlifted to a Denver, Colo., hospital after being struck by lightning in Spearfish on Sunday.

"It is with deep sadness that I share with you news of the passing of Gage after sustaining serious injuries this past weekend," BHSU President Tom Jackson, Jr. said. "Our thoughts, prayers and deepest sympathies are extended to the McSpadden family, friends and colleagues of Gage."

McSpadden, a native of Rawlins, Wyo., took a redshirt this past season in cross country and outdoor track and field in preparation for his senior season. During the 2015 indoor track &amp field season, McSpadden set a personal-best in the mile with a time of 4:30.63 and in the 5,000-meter run in 15:26.83.

He also received academic recognitions from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference as a member of the Honor Roll with his 3.46 GPA, and was selected to present his research "Improvements to Quality of Life for People with an Intellectual Disability" at the 2015 National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR). McSpadden also dedicated time as a volunteer with the Special Olympics.

Services and memorial information will be announced when available.
