Black Hills State University will now offer two new sociology-related certificate programs. The programs were formally approved at the recent South Dakota Board of Regents meeting last week.

The new certificates will provide additional opportunities for students and address workforce needs in the state and region.

The Certificate in Social and Cultural Awareness is designed to help students develop cultural competencies needed to live and thrive in a complex and fast-paced globalized world. The certificate, which includes four courses, will be of value for current students as well as for professional development training in a variety of workplace settings.

The Certificate in Social Resiliency, comprised of four courses, addresses issues along several important dimensions including social, economic, political and environmental planning. Collectively, these issues are important for individuals working in a variety of professions such as rural development, human resources, economic development, and social services.

With these two additions, BHSU now offers 15 certificates including: Certificate in Archives, Entrepreneurial Studies, Graphic Design, Guitar Performance, Historical Site Interpretation, Journalism, Management, Management Information Systems, Museums, Photography, Piano Pedagogy, Professional Writing, and Theatre Production. Additional certificates and associate degrees are being developed.

Dr. Rod Custer, provost and vice president of academic affairs at BHSU, noted that certificates are an excellent way for students and professionals to obtain new skills and knowledge.

"The certificate programs offered at BHSU provide a focused educational and skill-building opportunity to both current students and members of the community wanting to fine-tune their expertise," said Custer.
