BHSU to honor outstanding alumni during Swarm Week celebration

Black Hills State University announces the selection of five exceptional alumni to be honored during the annual Swarm Week homecoming celebration Oct. 5-10.

The 2015 Alumni Awards Luncheon will be held Friday, Oct. 9 at 12 p.m. in the Joy (Proctor) Krautschun Alumni/Foundation Welcome Center in Spearfish. Tickets for the luncheon are $20 per person and available through Sept. 24 by calling the BHSU Alumni Office at 605-642-6385. Seating is limited.

The 2015 BHSU Alumni Awards will be presented to:

Excellence in Education Award: Dr. Tom Hills, Class of 1962, currently resides in Spearfish. Dr. Hills graduated with his bachelor&rsquos degree from BHSU in business education. After teaching in Alcester and Brookings, Hills traveled west receiving his master&rsquos in political science and doctorate in the politics of education/educational administration from the University of Oregon. Hills returned to BHSU where he built a 34-year career as an educator and leader serving as professor of political science, chair of the division of social science, and dean of the College of Business &amp Public Affairs until 1998. He then taught for an additional five years, before retiring in 2003. Hills was named Best Adviser on Campus by the Vets Club, Student Senate Outstanding Teacher, and Distinguished Faculty. Hills participated in several National Science Foundation Chautauqua Short Courses held in the former Soviet Union and China. Hills was also named a Fulbright Scholar serving in an academic administrator role in Germany. BHSU named Hills Professor Emeritus in political science in 2003. Hills served as a member of the South Dakota&rsquos state House of Representatives from 2005-2009.

Special Service Award: Dan Green, Class of 1964, currently resides in Spearfish. Green graduated from BHSU with a bachelor&rsquos of education degree in social science. He taught social studies in the Vermillion School District. While at Vermillion, Green started the wrestling program in 1965 and was assistant football coach from 1964- 68. He received his master&rsquos in secondary education from the University of South Dakota before moving back to Spearfish where he taught at Spearfish High School until 1975. Green was the head coach for the Spearfish Spartans football team from 1969-74. In 1975 Green began his career as an insurance agent in Spearfish and two years later became one of the owners of an independent insurance agency and a real estate office. He was named Agent of the Year by the Professional Insurance Agents of South Dakota before retiring in 2010. In 1992, Green and colleagues franchised the Spearfish Perkins Restaurant opening other restaurants in Watertown and Scottsbluff, Neb. He currently serves as President of the Yellow Jacket Foundation Board of Directors, is an active member of the Green and Gold Club/Yellow Jacket Club for over 30 years, and serves on the School of Business Advisory Board.

Distinguished Alumnus Award: William A. Roberts, III, Class of 1973, currently resides in Falls Church, Va. Roberts graduated with a bachelor&rsquos of science degree from BHSU. He obtained his juris doctor with honors from the University of Iowa School of Law and his master of laws degree with honors from The George Washington University Law School. He served as attorney-advisor in the Navy Regional Procurement Center, assistant to the general council of the U.S. Navy, and chief counsel for Wang Laboratories, Inc., Federal Services Division before going into private practice. For over 15 years, Roberts has been a senior partner and co-chair of the nation&rsquos premier Government Contracts Practice Group at Wiley Rein LLP in Washington, D.C. Roberts is an active player in charting the firm&rsquos strategy, finances, talent and professional affairs. Roberts was named one of D.C.&rsquos "Super Lawyers" for government contracts by Super Lawyers magazine. He received the AV Peer Review Rating, Matindale-Hubbell&rsquos highest ranking by peers for general ethical standards and legal ability. Roberts is an avid skier and golfer and is a member of the Army Navy Country Club&rsquos traveling competitive golf team.

Special Achievement Award: Sharon House, Class of 1971, currently resides in Oneida, Wis. House graduated from BHSU with a bachelor&rsquos of science degree. Following graduation, she built a career that combined her aspiration to work for her tribe, Oneida, and serve as an attorney. House worked for the Oneida Tribe in several different capacities before attending the University of Wisconsin Law School. House&rsquos roles as in-house counsel for the Oneida Tribe and contract attorney for the Oneida Gaming Commission led peers to nominate her for selection as one of Casino Enterprise Management Magazine&rsquos 2010 Great Women of Gaming. Currently serving as judge, House was elected to the Appellate Court of the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin in November 2014.

Young Alumni Achievement Award: Amber (Moeding) Bell, Class of 06, currently resides in Pierre. Bell graduated with a bachelor&rsquos degree in biology from BHSU. Bell says working as a student technology fellow and in the Center for Conservation of Biological Resources (CCBR) at BHSU inspired her to study forensic science. She pursued her master&rsquos degree in forensic science at Nebraska Wesleyan University and completed an internship at the Miami-Dade Medical Examiner&rsquos Office in Miami, Fla. While obtaining her master&rsquos she worked at a livestock genetics company, Geneseek. Bell now works for the Division of Criminal Investigation&rsquos Forensic Laboratory in Pierre. Amber evaluates, examines, and identifies physical evidence from and at crime scenes, prepares reports, and provides expert testimony in criminal courts. Amber became a certified crime scene investigator in 2014.
