BHSU prepares for 2015 Swarm Days Celebration

           Black Hills State University students go through the 2014 Swarm Days parade. The 2015 Swarm Days theme is Boot Scootin&rsquo Victory. The parade is Saturday, Oct. 10 at 10 a.m. Community members are invited to register a float for the parade. Registration can be done online at The deadline for parade registration is Friday, Oct. 2.



Black Hills State University is Boot Scootin&rsquo to Victory with a variety of Swarm Days activities.

The 2015 BHSU homecoming week is Monday, Oct. 5 through Saturday, Oct. 10. This year&rsquos theme is "Boot Scootin&rsquo Victory" and highlights include pep rallies, Swarm Days Coronation, a parade and football and volleyball games.

"It&rsquos a great way to for all of us on campus and in the community to join together and cheer on the Yellow Jackets," said Karley Gulle, president of the BHSU Swarm Days Committee.

In addition to the Yellow Jacket football game on Saturday, Oct. 10, the volleyball team will host two matches, which Gulle said will increase school spirit. The annual Hike to "H," a bonfire and the burning of the "B-H" also will be held.

Community events include the ever popular Kiddie Carnival on Wednesday, Oct. 7, from 4 to 6 p.m. This is a great way for alumni to return to campus with their kids, said Jessie Gramm, with the student engagement office at BHSU. The carnival has a variety of games and activities for kids and is held on the BHSU campus green.

The BHSU Swarm Days parade is Saturday, Oct. 10 at 10 a.m. and runs from Jackson Boulevard down Main Street. There is still time to register a float for the parade, and Gulle encourages community members to sign up and become a part of this annual community tradition. Immediately following the parade, a tailgate social will be held at the Joy (Proctor) Krautschun Alumni/Foundation Welcome Center at 11:15 a.m. before the Yellow Jacket football team will takes on Western State Colorado at 1 p.m. at Lyle Hare Stadium.

The Jacket Pack, a new student organization dedicated to boosting school spirit, will lead a pep rally on Tuesday, Oct. 6 at 6 p.m. at Lyle Hare Stadium. Their involvement in Yellow Jacket athletics and school spirit has been a great addition to Swarm Days, Gulle said.

"We&rsquore excited to kick off Jacket Pack and get students involved in all aspects of school spirit on campus," said Whitney Bischoff, Jacket Pack adviser. "Swarm Days is a great way to recognize student leaders, alumni and faculty by getting everyone together to celebrate all that BHSU has to offer."

"The Jacket Pack has so much fun &ndash they&rsquore willing to give and help and they&rsquore so excited for spirit for the school," Gulle said.

Alumni are welcomed back to campus during the week, as well. The Alumni Awards Luncheon is scheduled for 12 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9. Five outstanding alumni will be recognized. Those being recognized include:

&middot         William A. Roberts III, &rsquo73, Distinguished Alumni Award

&middot         Dr. Tom Hills, &rsquo62, Excellence in Education Award

&middot         Sharon House, &rsquo71, Special Achievement Award

&middot         Dan Green, &rsquo64, Special Service Award

&middot         Amber (Moeding) Bell, &rsquo06, Young Alumni Achievement Award  

In addition, three athletes, a coach, two contributors and three athletic teams will be inducted into the Yellow Jacket Hall of Fame during the 2015 Hall of Fame Banquet, Friday, Oct. 9. Those inducted include:

&middot         Anna M. Deaver-Faustino, ྛ,

&middot         Stacy Finkbeiner, Class of ྕ,

&middot         Dennis R. Newell, Jr., Class of ཀ,

&middot         Dwight Gunnare, Class of ྎ, will be inducted as a coach and

&middot         Chris (ཱྀ &amp ྄) and Belva (྄ &amp ྆) Anderson will be inducted as this year's contributors.  

&middot         The 1932 football team, 1964-65 men's basketball team, and the 1973 men's cross country team will also be inducted.  

Bischoff, along with other BHSU students, are excited to celebrate with the community.

"It shows that Spearfish cares about BHSU and campus life is about creating a city-wide hype. We&rsquore excited to begin community involvement with Swarm and continue it throughout the year to create a positive student and community interaction."
