Black Hills State University opened the 19th annual BHSU Alumni Art Show in the Ruddell Gallery, located in the David B. Miller Yellow Jacket Student Union. The exhibit is free and open to public.

Black Hills State University opened its 19th annual Alumni Art Show this week. Thirty-four individual artists&rsquo work includes combinations from sculpture and painting to unique, forged metal pieces.

The annual alumni art show includes submissions from BHSU alumni from the art and art education programs. The work will be displayed in the Ruddell Gallery in David B. Miller Yellow Jacket Student Union until Oct. 16. The Ruddell Gallery is open Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., Fridays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The exhibit is free and open to the public.

"This year seems like landscape artwork has dominated the entries. We received a variety of different interpretations of landscape work, from large scale acrylic and oil paintings to really small scale postcards size landscapes in the exhibition," said David Wilson, professor of art at BHSU. "We also have traditional Native American sculpture and art works. There is a little something for everyone in this year&rsquos art show exhibition."

BHSU received a unique submission this year, Wilson noted - a bell from an old fire extinguisher. Visitors will be able to not only to see the piece, but also touch and ring the bell.

"Not a lot of people realize how thick fire extinguishers are until you get to see up inside of it. You will realize that the metal makes a perfect bell. Visitors are more than welcome to give it a light tap and hear the resonance of the bell. It&rsquos a pretty unique piece and I have never seen anything like it before," said Wilson.
