A packed room of Black Hills State University alumni, supporters, students, faculty and staff, and Spearfish community members gathered at BHSU today for the grand opening of the Joy (Proctor) Krautschun Alumni/Foundation Welcome Center (Joy Center) on the BHSU campus.

The Joy Center is a 6,500 square-foot building that houses the University Advancement offices and offers a gathering space before BHSU athletic events, concerts, welcoming new students and other activities. The center also can be rented for business meetings and receptions for the community.

The center is named after Joy (Proctor) Krautschun, a BHSU alumna and longtime supporter of the University, and Steve Meeker, Vice President of University Advancement at BHSU, said the name couldn't be more fitting.

"This center is named very appropriately. We couldn't be more excited for it to be the Joy Center," said Meeker. "Joy was a top-notch volunteer. Her involvement with Black Hills State developed into a lifetime love and passion for students, faculty, Swarm Days and other University events."

Krautschun was a 1973 Black Hills State College graduate and during her time at BHSU, she was instrumental in implementing and coaching the University's first varsity women's basketball team. She passed away in early November 2013.

During her time at BHSU, Krautschun was a member of the BHSU homecoming royalty, a cheerleader and was involved in the dance program and intramural sports. She served for many years on the BHSU Alumni Association board and in 2007 she received the Special Service Award. In 2009, she and her husband, Harvey, were the Swarm Day parade grand marshals.

Guests shared memories of Joy (Proctor) Krautschun at BHSU and in the community during the celebration. Guest speakers included BHSU President Dr. Tom Jackson, Jr., Spearfish Mayor Dana Boke and Harvey Krautschun, Joy's husband.

"The essence of this building is really about bringing the BHSU family together," Jackson said. "The individuals in this room, you're going to be able to celebrate in this accomplishment in more ways than one, in part of Joy Krautschun."

Harvey Krautschun, who is also a BHSU alumni and owner of Financial Benefits, Inc., emphasized his appreciation of the time, talent and treasure donated by the community and alumni to make the Joy Center a reality. He shared memories of his late wife and emphasized the impact she's had on not only his life, but others.

"My joyous, joyful Joy to the world," Krautschun said. "She was all about Spearfish and the Alumni Association and Spearfish Ambassadors, she was just a wonderful person and it warms my heart. She was my partner in every aspect of family and business."

"Spearfish and Black Hills State really are brothers and sisters. They are a wonderful family, and the more we grow, the better we get," Krautschun said.

The facility, although located on the BHSU campus, will serve many needs for the Spearfish community, Boke said.

"This is a testament of true vision, commitment and pride in Black Hills State," Boke said. "It is also a great reflection on the city of Spearfish. The Joy Center will be a place of gathering, of celebrating and of remembering."
