BHSU alumni, athletic teams inducted into 2014 Yellow Jacket Hall of Fame

Black Hills State University alumni and BHSU athletic teams were inducted into the BHSU Yellow Jacket Hall of Fame at a special induction ceremony during the 2014 Swarm Days celebration.

&middot The 1970 men&rsquos track team

"Each year as part of the Yellow Jacket Hall of Fame ceremony we honor former athletes, coaches, contributors and teams who&rsquove made significant contributions to athletics both past and present," said Steve Meeker, vice president of University Advancement at BHSU. "Hall of fame ceremonies are always special because we&rsquore honoring the best of the best and this year&rsquos ceremony was no exception."

"Expressing in words what being inducted into the Yellow Jacket Hall of Fame means to me, is by far one of the most difficult things I have had to do yet," Schelle said. "To me it brings into mind all of the thanks I have for so many people who had a hand in helping me develop into the athlete and basketball player I was.

"I enjoyed every second of playing for the Yellow Jackets and it was an over joyous moment to see that all of the time and hard work I invested was recognized in such a high honor," she added. "The many memories, basketball and otherwise that I have from attending BHSU will forever be treasured."

Inductees&rsquo accomplishments include:

Amanda Schelle

Schelle was recognized for her accomplishments as part of the BHSU women&rsquos basketball team from 1998-2002. During her time at BHSU, Schelle was second all-time in scoring with 1,666 career points, averaging 14.61 points per game. In addition, she has 404 assists, 237 steals, 228 three-point baskets and was a 78 percent free-throw shooter. Schelle was named second All-Conference twice and First team All-Conference in 2001. She was also Honorable Mention All-American in 2000.

Kevin Ahlemeier

Ahlemeier was a defensive lineman for the Yellow Jackets football team from 1993 to 1996. He was an NAIA First Team All-American in 1996 and an NAIA Honorable Mention All-American in 1994.  He was the NAIA District 12 Defensive Player of the Week in October of 1993, the SDIC Defensive Player of the Week in 1994 and the NAIA National Player of the Week in 1994. Ahlemeier was All-Conference in 1993 and 1994.  

Tim Bishop

Bishop is being recognized for his success on the BHSU cross country and track teams. Bishop ran cross country and track for the Yellow Jackets from 2000 to 2003. He was a four-time national champion in track in the outdoor 1,500-meter run, indoor one mile run, indoor 1,000-meter and indoor distance medley relay team. At one point, Bishop had his name on 11 BHSU track records. He was named All-Conference in 2000, 2001 and 2002 in cross country and was an NAIA Scholar Athlete in cross country in 2001 and 2002. Bishop also was a nine-time All-American athlete.

Earl Gray

Gray is a 1959 graduate of BHSU. Gray coached wrestling for 25 years in Wyoming and was inducted into the Wyoming Coaches Hall of Fame and was Wyoming Coach of the Year in 1973. His overall record includes 249 wins, 56 losses and one tie. In addition, he&rsquos earned five district championships, two state runner-up titles and five consecutive state championships. Gray also coached junior legion baseball and was an assistant high school coach in football, basketball and track.

Stadium Sports Grill

The Stadium Sports Grill in downtown Spearfish was inducted into the Yellow Jacket Hall of Fame as a contributor for its dedicated support of BHSU athletics. The Stadium Sports Grill has supported BHSU athletics since 1993. Each year the business sponsors the Yellow Jacket Golf Classic and Alumni Mile. The Stadium Sports Grill donated more than $116,000 to the athletics program at BHSU since 1993. Clair Donovan and John and Jo Heck own The Stadium Sports Grill.

The 1970 men&rsquos track team

The 1970 men&rsquos track team was the first track and field team to win an SDIC conference championship at BHSU the first championship in track and field in 22 years. 1970 team member Randy Mink set the school record in the 440 yard hurdles, a record that still stands today.  

The 1979 baseball team

The BHSU 1979 Yellow Jacket baseball team won the South Dakota Intercollegiate Conference with a perfect 11-0 conference record. The Jackets ended the season with a 22-5 record for the season and won the District 12 championship. The Yellow Jackets reached the finals of the Area 3 NAIA tournament before being ousted by Southeast Oklahoma.

This year&rsquos inductees also were honored during the 2014 Swarm Days parade and at halftime of the Swarm Days football game.
