Don Lyon, Spearfish Middle School Principal graduated from BHSU in 1995. When asked about his approach in dealing with the impacts of COVID-19 on education, Lyon says he always goes back to his No. 1 goal: “Taking care of the kids.” Lyon says decisions had to be made quickly over the past few weeks after Gov. Noem announced the initial school closure in mid-March. As a leader, Lyon says he reached out to his staff and empowered them to make decisions, too, about what was best for their students in regards to education.
