At BHSU, each student makes their mark on a University committed to helping them turn their possibilities into realities.

Campus activities/clubs: I am involved in football, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

Tell me a favorite memory or experience at BHSU: My experiences with the football team and coming together into a brotherhood.

Tell me about your first few weeks on campus: The first few weeks have been very busy with getting accustomed to school and athlete life. I’ve met most of my friends through sports and I have been surprised at how different college life is even though I live in the same town I grew up in.

Favorite place to visit in Spearfish or the Black Hills: I enjoy hiking up to Friendship Tower on Mt. Roosevelt or hiking up Crow Peak.

Future plans: I plan on becoming a coach in the future. I also want to earn my master’s degree in whatever major I decide but my biggest goal right now is to get A’s in all of my classes this semester.

Campus activities and clubs: Station Manager of KBHU/KJKT Radio, President of BHSU Concert Choir, Member of BHSU Honors Program

Favorite Memory at BHSU: One of my favorite times during my stay at BHSU would be the summer of 2014. Late in the spring semester, I had asked to be trained to do my own show on the campus radio station, the Buzz. I was given permission to come in every week during the summer to broadcast my show, and every week I fell more in love with the station. That fall semester I decided to change my major to become trained in broadcasting, and I haven't regretted that choice.

Professor who has influenced me: Someone who has been there for me since the first week is Dr. Courtney Huse Wika. I met her through the Honors Program on campus, and she has always been one to make herself available to any student seeking guidance. She makes a great advisor, and constantly pushes you to succeed. I think that kind of attitude is really unique to BHSU--it's the one place where professors actively engage in pushing students to broaden their horizons.

Favorite place to visit in Spearfish or the Black Hills: I can always find much-needed peace and quiet in the Canyon, specifically hiking 11th Hour. The natural beauty of the Hills never ceases to amaze me.

Future plans: My dream is to work with audio, whether that be by producing my own podcast or working as an on-air personality for a radio station. I am currently interning at the X Rock/Eagle Country stations, and I'm learning a lot about how a station operates. More importantly, though, I am learning what kind of work I want to get into when I graduate.

Campus activities and clubs: I am involved in the University Honors Program, Crux Climbing Club, and Presidential Student Ambassadors.

Favorite Memory at BHSU: Thus far, my favorite memory on campus has been traveling to the Philippines last semester as part of the BHSU Service Learning Project and working with children at one of the rural schools. It was truly a life-changing experience that I'll remember forever.

Professor who has influenced me: I have had many professors who have influenced me during my time at BH, but professor Gina Gibson and Dr. Courtney Huse-Wika would have to be the most influential. Both professors have always had open office doors and helped me through any difficult decisions I've had to make both in academic fields and beyond - I'm very grateful for them both.

Favorite place to visit in Spearfish or the Black Hills: My favorite place is definitely Spearfish Canyon. I love being outdoors, so the Canyon is where I spend most of my study breaks. I love to rock climb, hike, mountain bike, or even just take a drive - it's really a special place we're so lucky to have so close to campus.

Campus activities/clubs: Women in STEM, BARK, Honors Program, BRIN

Favorite memory or experience at BHSU:
During my junior year, I had the wonderful opportunity to go to Botswana and South Africa with BHSU when we were setting up our service learning program. My favorite parts were interacting with the Botswana students and going on safari.  It was a once in a lifetime experience!

Why are you glad you chose to come to BHSU?
BHSU is often acclaimed for its business and education departments (rightfully so!), but I feel like I discovered a hidden gem when I started taking chemistry courses. I don’t know if I ever would have become a chemistry major if I hadn’t come to BHSU.  I really like the entire chemistry faculty and staff. I owe a lot of gratitude to my advisor and research mentor, Dr. Dixson. He’s always willing to help me with my post graduate plans and has given me incredible research opportunities that have heavily influenced my chosen career path.

What’s your favorite place to visit in Spearfish or the Black Hills?
The canyon when the leaves are changing.

What are your future plans?
I’m hoping to get accepted to a medicinal chemistry graduate program. Fingers crossed!

Campus activities: Presidential Student Ambassadors, JUR(Y): The Journal on Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity, the Writing Assistance Center, and the University Honors Program

Favorite memory or experience at BHSU: I've had an excellent time traveling to national research conferences. One of my best memories is sitting on the beach in San Diego before my presentation and heading to the convention center with a glaring red sunburn.

Favorite professor: Dr. Katrina Jensen has been a major influence on my time at BHSU. She has acted as my research mentor since I was a freshman and has offered lots of advice concerning class schedules and future plans in addition to chemical concepts and laboratory techniques. I am extremely glad to have come to BH because professors are accessible and willing to go out of their way to help - something that can't necessarily be expected on a bigger campus.

Favorite place to visit in Spearfish or the Black Hills: A few of favorite places in the Black Hills are Devil's Bathtub, 11th Hour Gulch, and the Badlands. Anywhere in Spearfish Canyon, only 5-10 minutes away, is beautiful.

Future plans: My future plans are to attend graduate school in pursuit of a Ph.D. in chemistry. This semester I will be completing an independent capstone research project as well as applying to graduate schools and grants before graduating in May. Right now, my biggest goal is balancing my remaining school and research work while still devoting time to figuring out my graduate studies. I am currently stuck on writing my personal statement!

Therese Wilhelmi, art and humanities major from Black Hawk

Campus activities/clubs: BHSU Soccer, Newman Club, Nights of Country Swing

Favorite memory or experience at BHSU: My favorite memory so far is the volunteer work in the first week. I got to work with the firefighters and some other students to clean the trucks and the station, afterwards we got to try the firemen's suits (and even had a little race). It was a great experience!

Tell me about your first few weeks on campus: These weeks have been great, it took a little adjusting to get used to but there's always something to do. I've been blessed with and amazing group of girls on my soccer team, as well as fun and entertaining professors and classmates. I'm surprised how fast the semester is passing, it’s going to be gone before I know it!

Favorite place to visit in Spearfish or the Black Hills: I really enjoy Dunn Brothers Coffee in Rapid City. I also like to wander through Custer State Park now and then.

Future plans: My goal is to continue traveling the world, whether that be through a job, internship, or schooling I leave that in God's hands.

High School activities/clubs: Editor of school newspaper and member of LDHS jazz band for four years.

Favorite memory or experience at BHSU: My favorite memory at BHSU so far was looking at campus on my first day of class, taking a deep breath and letting the realization hit me that I was actually a college student now.

Tell me about your first few weeks on campus: In my first few weeks, I've made friends primarily through simply introducing myself when I see people in class or in the hallways, and I've been surprised with how friendly everybody is on campus!

Favorite place to visit in Spearfish or the Black Hills: My favorite place in the Black Hills is the summit of Devil's Bathtub in Spearfish Canyon. I love the serene beauty of the scenery and the crystal clearness of the water.

Future plans: My biggest future goal is to graduate with my marketing degree and eventually become an advertising professional in the Black Hills area.
