Guidelines for English 101 and 201


GUIDELINES FOR ENGLISH 101 AND 201

The common texts for English 101 and 201 will be:

Handbook (Required): 

A Writer's Reference, 4th edition, Diana Hacker packaged with a dictionary

Reader (Optional for full time and long term part time faculty):

The Blair Reader, 14th edition

English 101

  • Writer writes 6 essays at least 3 pages long, including the final, or 18 pages of polished text.
  • Writer drafts, revises, and edits expository essays in a variety of rhetorical modes leading up to argumentation, based on personal experience, readings, and some research.
  • Students will also be introduced to the conventions of writing with sources. 
  • Readings can be chosen from all topic areas in The Blair Reader, 4th edition
  • There will be a common final exam with a common prompt for English 101.

English 201

  • Writer produces 4 essays at least 5 pages long and writes a research paper at least 5 pages long utilizing adequate sources of a variety of types; or 25 pages of polished prose including a research paper at least 5 pages long utilizing adequate sources of a variety of types.
  • Writer drafts, revises, and edits essays of argumentation that use sources effectively to support the thesis.
  • Writer writes to and from sources.
  • Students will use the writing of other writers as sources to support their own ideas. 
  • Individual English 201 instructors should decide what end of the semester activity best completes the course; in other words, there will be NO common prompt for the English 201 final exam.  However, English 201 instructors should use the common English composition exam time for the class final exam.
