The Opera Program

The Johanna Meier Opera Theatre Institute offers concentrated study in a supportive environment, with intensive individual attention offered by the faculty. By working in an ensemble atmosphere, student camaraderie develops an important understanding of future rapport with colleagues, coaches, and those in charge of opera production.

Registration for Program

Housing and meals are available for a nominal charge in the University Residence Halls. Persons with disabilities requesting accommodations for this program and associated events should contact Dr. Nancy Roberts (605) 642-6230 at least 48 hours prior to its start.

Auditions for Program

Students, age 17 or older, should submit a CD or video recording of three works, two in foreign language and one in English, and a non-refundable deposit of $200 (if accepted into the program) to Ms. Terri Bjorum, College of Liberal Arts, Unit 9003, Black Hills State University, Spearfish, SD 57799-9003. Applications accepted beginning January 15, 2013 (enrollment is limited), with the application deadline of March 1, 2014. Participants will be selected from these auditions. Those not selected will have the option to audit the workshop.

Cost for Participants

Cost of tuition for participants in this two-week program will be $800 plus 7% SD sales tax ($856 total). The full amount is due April 15, 2014. Late applications will be considered after March 1, 2014, but there will be a $50 late fee. Make checks out to Johanna Meier Opera Theatre Institute or JMOTI. In addition to the tuition, students who stay in the dorms will need to pay for their room (see housing information). Transportation to and from the airport or bus station in Rapid City is provided free.

Cancellation Policy

Students pay a non-refundable deposit at the time of registration and this is not refundable at any time.  The rest of the institute fee and housing cost is due by May 1st.  If a student withdraws after that date, the institute reserves the right to retain $200 more of the institute's fee to cover administrative costs.  There will be no refunds if the withdrawal is after the start of the program, regardless of the reason.

Audit Program Option

With this program, auditors pay half price and attend some of the classes and can participate in the opera night performance in small roles and in the chorus. Auditors pay $400 plus 7% SD sales tax (total = $428).


A limited number of quarter and half tuition scholarships will be awarded. In order to be eligible for a scholarship, students need to send in the scholarship application postmarked no later than March 1, 2014. Credit Option

For an additional fee, it is possible to earn two academic credits through this program. If you are interested, please indicate this on the application form.
