Center for Advancement of Math & Science Education (CAMSE)

CAMSE's mission is to promote effective and meaningful teaching and learning of science and mathematics at all levels. Areas of emphasis include:

  • Preparation of future teachers
  • Support of teachers already in the field through professional development in math content, science content, and innovative teaching strategies
  • Dissemination and evaluation of instructional materials
  • Research on the teaching and learning of mathematics and science.

Distinguished Scholars in Math and Science Education - The Distinguished Scholars Program is designed to enhance the preparation of undergraduates considering careers in teaching of mathematics and science. Please contact the Center about admission criteria and program details.

Resource Materials - Sample Math and Science Curricula: The Center houses a library of research-based instructional materials for both mathematics and science that can be checked out by practicing and prospective teachers.

Research Opportunities - The Center conducts research on how students learn and on teaching strategies most likely to promote learning. Research methods include classroom observations, laboratory lessons, assessment development, and teacher and student interviews. Undergraduate and graduate students interested in these areas of research are encouraged to contact the Center to learn about potential opportunities.

Professional Development Programs for Teachers - The Center offers a wide range of professional development workshops and consultation to school districts throughout South Dakota and the surrounding region. Please contact the Center for more information at 605-642-6873.
