Roughlock Falls Trail - A Fall Walk with a Twist
Outdoor Workshop

Who would have thought such a short trail could hold so many wonderful opportunities for images! During this leisurely two-mile round trip, you will have a chance to photograph colorful fall landscapes, wildflowers large and small, rushing mountain streams, inquisitive wildlife, waterfowl and unique birds. And to top it off, at the turnaround point is the beautiful Roughlock Falls, where you can practice your slow-motion waterfall shots and other creative photo techniques. This is a perfect all-in-one photo excursion!

The trail runs from the Spearfish Canyon Lodge and ends at Roughlock Falls.  It is a dirt/gravel path with small inclines.  At Roughlock Falls, it meets a boarded walkway which includes an optional short and steep climb to the top of the falls.   Participants should be prepared for unpredictable weather, and wear sturdy footwear. Some moderate hiking involved.

Photographers notes

Meeting Point:
Roughlock Falls Trailhead behind Spearfish Canyon Lodge.   Participants will drive down Spearfish Canyon to the parking lot behind the Spearfish Canyon Lodge.  The lower trailhead begins at the edge of the parking lot directly behind the lodge.  The drive is about 25 minutes from BHSU.

Things to know:
Participants will start at the trailhead to Roughlock Falls behind the Spearfish Canyon Lodge. The trail is an easy dirt path leading to the base of Roughlock Falls.  Photographers can take their time on the trail, go up it as far as they please.   There are good photo opportunities along the entire trail.

Things to bring:
There is plenty of room for a tripod.  There is typically a lot of good ground color, so a macro lens would work well here.  There are also plenty of chances to shoot water, so don't forget a polarizer or ND filter.
