Bear Butte Shoot

Bear Butte State Park encompasses a large volcanic mountain that never erupted, prairie vistas and numerous wildlife including buffalo. The mountain is sacred to many American Indian tribes who come here to hold religious ceremonies.  Bear Butte State Park holds a variety of possibilities for the creative photographer.

Photographer Jason Hahn will lead an exploration of the many angles from which to photograph Bear Butte.

Participants should be prepared for unpredictable weather, and wear sturdy footwear. Some moderate hiking involved.

Photographers Notes

Meeting point:
Bear Butte State Park visitors center.  Bear Butte is a prominent landmark just northeast of Sturgis.  It is about a 35 minute drive from BHSU and Spearfish.

Things to know:
Participants are responsible for the admission fee into the park. The daily park entry fees are $4 per person or $6 per vehicle.  There may be some moderate hiking involved.

What to bring:
Wide angle and a polarizer are two easy choices here.  There are a lot of angles to explore with Bear Butte.  There is a small herd of buffalo at the butte that might be in the right spot as well.
