Black Hills State will host piano workshops today - top

Black Hills State University will host two piano workshops by Dr. Susan Gray, music professor from the University of South Dakota (USD), Friday, Sept. 19. Both workshops will be held in Clare and Josef Meier Hall room 130.

The first workshop, “Teaching Students to Play Expressively,” will begin at 10 a.m., and the second, “Expressive Playing,” will begin at 2 p.m. In both workshops, Gray will discuss using technique, history, theory and imagination to play music more expressively.

Gray teaches piano pedagogy and piano courses at USD, is currently president of the South Dakota Music Teachers Association, and performs as a classical soloist and accompanist. She performs regularly as a member of the Rawlins Trio, and has recently released a CD of violin and piano music by women composers.

The piano workshops are open to the public at no charge. For more information contact Dr. Janeen Larsen, BHSU professor and chair of the fine and applied arts department, at 642-6241.

Ruddell Gallery announces upcoming shows - top

The Ruddell Gallery at Black Hills State University has announced the schedule of shows for this year which includes artwork from local, student, and international artists. The first show, Armor, Skin, and Rust, by Shannon Sargent is currently on display and will continue through Sept. 24.

Sargent, a native of Sioux City, Iowa, and art instructor at Morningside College, bases his work on his beliefs about the spiritual and physical world.

“Spiritual motivation is the primary reason I create art,” Sargent said in his written artist statement. “I illuminate the protective layers of my soul and beliefs onto the viewer to question my particular beliefs and that of the viewer.”

The installation show is a combination of both sculptures and paintings that have an interaction not just with each other but with the viewers as well. The abstract ideas of this body of work are evident in the pieces displayed in the show and are used to raise questions about the preservation, protection, and survival of one’s beliefs and ultimately one’s soul according to the artist.

“I chose the title Skin, Armor, and Rust because I felt it best described and related to the layers of the individual soul. Skin is translucent and can reveal many things beneath its surface. Armor is the layer or preservation, protection, and survival of the individual soul. Rust is correlated with death and like death; rust has its own wonderful color,” said Sargent.

Following Sargent’s show is the seventh annual alumni show which is scheduled for Sept. 29 through Oct. 22. This show will feature a variety of artistic work from BHSU alumni.

Michael Steele will exhibit his paintings and drawings in a show set for Oct. 27 through Nov. 19. 

Beginning Nov. 24 and continuing through Dec. 19, the Ruddell and the South Dakota Health Care Association will present Dakota Master Works which was created to showcase the talent and creativity of South Dakotans over the age of 60. The show includes various media including painting, woodcarving, photography, and sculpture.
The annual BHSU faculty show is scheduled to open Jan. 8 and run through Jan. 30.

Judy Lehner, a Rapid City based artist who works primarily in watercolor, will exhibit, Liberty and Justice for All, Feb. 2 through Mar. 5. The show is an exhibition of 31 watercolor and mixed media paintings, exploring a range of today’s social issues including homelessness, addiction and lost cultural identity.

Beginning Mar. 10, local artist Jenny Braig will display a collection of paintings. Her show will continue through April 9.

The annual student photography show, which will include a collection of more than 100 photos taken by BHSU students during the 2003-2004 term, is set to run from April 12 to April 27.

The Ruddell will then host the Student Award Show. The award show is a collection selected works form BHSU art students. The award show will open April 29 and conclude May 16.

New piano duet clubs will meet at Meier Hall - top

Mimi Swisher, community member and piano accompanist, and Jennifer Bailey, a BHSU music major from Lead, practice a duet in one of the new practice rooms in Clare and Josef Meier Hall at BHSU. The two are part of a new Tuesday Duet Club which will meet once a month to practice duet skills. Several performances are also planned. 

Two piano duet clubs, which include community members and students, have been established at Black Hills State University.

The groups will meet once each month in the new music building, Clare and Josef Meier Hall, on the BHSU campus.

The Tuesday Duet Club first met Sept. 16 and presently has 14 members. At the first meeting, each member was assigned a duet partner and everyone will perform a duet at the next meeting. Each meeting, new partners and new duets will be selected. This club will continue to meet at 9:30 a.m. every third Tuesday of the month.

There will also be a Sunday Duet Club. The first meeting of this 
group will be Sunday, Sept. 28, at 2:30 p.m. in Meier Hall room 130.

According to Janeen Larsen, chair of the department of fine and applied arts, the clubs plan to do one or two concerts each year to raise funds for music scholarships at BHSU.

“The members enjoy this opportunity to maintain and improve their piano skills,” Larsen said. “They also enjoy meeting other advanced pianists in the community.”

Record setting cyclist will discuss exploration and education - top

Dan Buettner, a pioneer in both exploration and education, will speak at Black Hills State University Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. in the David B. Miller Yellow Jacket Student Union Market Place.

Buettner, a native of St. Paul, Minn., who has set several records in long distance cycling and created one of the nation’s premier interactive educational programs, will discuss some of history’s greatest mysteries. During the presentation, featuring pictures by National Geographic photographer David McClain combined with short videos, Buettner will take the audience through history as they explore and help solve those mysteries. He will also address interactive education, global environmental issues, ancient wisdom in a modern context and current events.

Prior to starting his company, Earthtreks, Inc., in 1995, Buettner set three Guinness World Records in long distance cycling. Americastrek took a team of four Americans on a 15,500-mile ride from Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, to Tierra del Fuego, Argentina. Sovietrek featured two Russians and Dan and his brother, Steve, as they biked 12,888 miles around the world.

Earthtreks, Inc. uses the World Wide Web to take children on journeys of discovery. The company’s first project, MayaQuest, enabled an online audience of some 30,000 classrooms to direct a team of experts to help solve the mystery of the ancient Mayan collapse.

Buettner has led over 15 Quest teams worldwide and personally pedaled over 115,000 miles. He and his team have traveled by bicycle through Africa, Asia, China, Greece, the Amazon River and the Galapagos Islands. The team’s adventures have prompted CNN, NPR, the CBS radio network, and the Washington Post, among others, to track their progress.

Buettner co-produced an Emmy award-winning PBS documentary on Africatrek and was the voice-over for an Africatrek segment on National Geographic. His book, Africatrek, won the Scientific American’s “Young Reader Award.”

Over the past 10 years Buettner has delivered more than 500 keynote speeches to diverse audiences. For his hundreds of speaking engagements on college campuses nationwide, the National Association of Campus Activities inducted Buettner into its “Hall of Fame.”

Brule will perform at Black Hills State - top

Brule’, the American Indian Group of the Year, will perform at Black Hills State University Oct. 11 at 7:30 p.m. in the Donald E. Young Center Gymnasium.

The concert is a fundraising event hosted by the Center of Indian Studies.

Brule’ is a musical group that includes Paul LaRoche along with his son, Shane, and daughter, Nicole, as well as Vlasis and Eagle. Their powerful Native American performances include music, dance and a full theatrical production.

With national appearances on Regis and Kathie Lee, CNN Worldbe, and others, Brule’ has come of age. Brule’ was presented the 1999 “Outstanding Music Achievement Award” by the “The First Americans in the Arts” and the 2002 “Group of the Year” award from the Native American Music Academy.

Paul, who was adopted at birth off the Lower Brule Sioux Indian Reservation, discovered his heritage in 1993 after the death of both adoptive parents. He reunited with a brother, sister, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. The discovery of his true heritage has greatly affected Paul’s life and those around him, and the influence on his career has been monumental. Overwhelmed by the experience, Paul has turned his powerful feelings to humanitarian causes through music.

It is now Paul’s mission to be a cultural role model and use his music to make the world a better place for all relations upon the Earth. Brule’s annual coast to coast tour including performances at such venues as Harbor Fest in Virginia Beach, Indian Summer in Milwaukee and many other outdoor festivals and events. In September, the group performed at the premier of Kevin Costner’s movie “Open Range.”

Current band members include: Paul on keyboards, Nicole on flute, Shane on guitar, Vlasis on guitar, and Eagle on traditional drum and percussion. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. and the doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Tickets are $15 for general admission and $20 for VIP seating. Tickets are available by calling 642-6578 during the daytime or 717-0053 in the evenings. Black Hills State University’s Swarm Day Committee is preparing for the annual homecoming celebration, which begins Monday, Sept. 29 with coronation at 7 p.m. in the David B. Miller Yellow Jacket Student Union Market Place and concludes Saturday, Oct. 4 at 1:30 p.m. in Lyle Hare Stadium with the homecoming football game against Dickinson State University. This year’s Swarm Week theme is “Swarmin’ in the Jungle.”

Alumni Awards breakfast will honor four during Swarm Week - top

The Black Hills State University Alumni Association will honor four individuals for their service and achievements at an awards breakfast Saturday, Oct. 4, at 8:30 a.m., in the David B. Miller Yellow Jacket Student Union Jacket Legacy Room.

Individuals being recognized are Beth (Gallup) Benning, Spearfish, Distinguished Alumni Award; John Fidler, Palmdale, Calif., Special Achievement Award; Linda (Morris) McKay, Belle Fourche, Excellence in Education Award; and Jim Benning, Spearfish, Special Service Award.

Beth Benning, a 1973 summa cum laude graduate with a degree in business administration, was recently named 2003 South Dakota Finance Officer of the Year. In 1973 Beth became the assistant finance officer for the city of Spearfish and was promoted to municipal finance officer in 1979.

She remains involved with her alma mater as a member of the BHSU Foundation Board of Directors and a member and past president of the BHSU Alumni Association.

John Fidler, a former hospital administrator who now serves as a senior consultant for M.L. Schwartz and Associates, says BHSU was the right choice to prepare him for success in the healthcare field. John received his degree in chemistry from BHSU in 1960.

Throughout his career as CEO of several major hospitals in California and Missouri, John has been a healthcare leader with expertise in developing new services, resulting in increased market share, higher profits, improved productivity and quality improvement.

In his present position John provides operational, financial, and strategic consulting, healthcare facility design, master planning and JCAHO support to hospitals and healthcare systems.

Linda McKay, a 1966 graduate with a degree in business education, was recently named Belle Fourche Teacher of the Year and South Dakota Teacher of the Year. Linda teaches business and computer technology to high school students. She is also involved in career preparation and the school-to-career program.

Linda serves as business department chairperson and computer lab/software mentor for students, staff, and community members; advises new teachers; and supervises student teachers and junior and senior field experience students. She is an innovative curriculum developer and has written several grants for start-up vocational programs, classroom equipment, and instruction.

Jim Benning, owner and manager of Ainsworth-Benning in Spearfish, will receive the special service award. He provides employment for 65 to 130 people, many of whom are BHSU students.

Jim is an active supporter of BHSU. His service to BHSU includes the donation of labor to renovate the Institutional Advancement Office, which is home to the Alumni Association, BHSU Foundation and Yellow Jacket Foundation staff members. He also donated the labor to install the new flagpole at Lyle Hare Stadium. Meeker indicated that this past year, Jim purchased a restored pickup with a flatbed for the sole purpose of letting the Alumni Association use it for their float.

Five will be inducted into the Yellow Jacket Hall of Fame - top

Black Hills State University will induct five people into the Yellow Jacket Hall of Fame at a banquet Friday, Oct. 3, at 6 p.m. in the David B. Miller Yellow Jacket Student Union Jacket Legacy Room.

Athletes to be inducted are Kevin Nowotny, Class of ‘80, Adrian, Minn.; Jylann (Soulek-Barham) Ewer, Class of ‘92, Olivet; and Tom Olson, Class of ‘81, Norfolk, Neb. Dave Little, Spearfish, will be inducted as a coach and Myles Kennedy, Spearfish, will be inducted as a contributor.

Kevin Nowotny played four years of baseball for BHSU from 1977 to 1980 during which time he was a member of four consecutive conference championship teams from 1977-80, two District 12 championship teams in 1979 and 1980, and two NAIA area tournament appearances in 1979 and 1980. He was selected South Dakota Iowa-Conference (SDIC) all-conference four years, all-District 12 his sophomore, junior and senior years, and earned honorable mention all-American in 1979. In 1980 he became the first winner of the Cliff Papik Scholarship.

During her career at BHSU, Jylann Ewer lettered one year in basketball and claimed the “Hustler” award, but she excelled in track and field.

Jylann competed in indoor track for two years in which she was the District 12 champion in the long and triple jumps and holds the BHSU indoor long jump record with an 18’3” jump. She also ranks in the all-time BHSU top 10 performances in the 55-meter hurdles, high jump and triple jump.

Her outdoor track and field career consisted of being a member of the four-time champion SDIC team and being a three-time SDIC Outstanding Female Athlete. She won individual SDIC championships in the long jump four years, triple jump four years, 100-meter hurdles, and high jump. She was also a member of the winning 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relays. In addition to the five school records she set and still holds in the 100-meter hurdles (14.7 sec.), long jump (19’”), triple jump (37’8”), high jump (5’6”), and heptathlon (4,374), Jylann was a four-time all-American with her best performance at the national track meet placing sixth in the long jump. She also holds the longest women’s collegiate jump in the state in the long jump.

Tom Olson competed in football, basketball, and track and field during his 1976-80 college career at BHSU. An almost unheard of achievement, he earned 11 letters in three different sports. In football, Tom played defensive end, tight end and offensive tackle during his four years on the gridiron. He was honorable mention all-SDIC his senior year at offensive tackle.

In basketball Tom scored a career high 29 points his junior year in a victory over archrival South Dakota Tech. As a junior, he ranked 14th in scoring, averaging 12.3 points and seven rebounds per game. As a senior he was named first team all-SDIC, averaging 9.2 rebounds and 12 points per game.

In track and field, Tom jumped a personal best 6’8” in the high jump, winning the District XII NAIA high jump competition and helping the Jackets win the District XII meet.

Dave Little began his collegiate coaching and teaching career at BHSU in 1968 and soon established himself as one of the state’s most successful collegiate track and field and cross country coaches. His name became synonymous with winning SDIC cross country and track titles - 17 cross country titles and 30 track and field titles in men’s and women’s competition during his tenure as a Yellow Jacket head coach.

Although he was successful as a teacher and administrator, it is coaching where his legacy will probably rest. During the 70s and early 80s his men’s teams dominated the league. For his coaching accomplishments, Dave was named NAIA District 12 coach of the year 14 times, South Dakota Sports Writer’s coach of the year once, and women’s SDIC coach of the year.

Myles Kennedy has been president of the Yellow Jacket Foundation and the Green and Gold Booster Club since 1999. Since then the club has raised over three quarters of a million dollars for athletic scholarships at BHSU under Myles’ leadership. Scholarships to student athletes have nearly doubled in this short period of time.

Myles has also purchased shirts for the cross country and volleyball teams, travel bags for the basketball teams and has been know to provide watermelon to the football team and spaghetti and lasagna feeds to the volleyball and cross country teams. He is known as the “brat man” as he often cooks the bratwurst at the pre-game tailgate parties for home football games. He also donates money to benefit student athlete scholarships.

Graduate Council minutes - top

The Graduate Council met Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 3:30 p.m. in Jonas 308.

Present were Alsup, Salomon, Molseed, Erickson, Lane, Rounds, Earley, and Silva. Sujithamrack, Strand, and Farrington were absent.

  • The council approved operational guidelines with any suggested revisions to be sent to the chair ASAP.
  • Silva's term is up this October. Alsup and Salomon agreed to conduct the at large election so that the new member can attend the October meeting.
  • Chair pointed out that 61 faculty had been approved in the spring as permanent graduate faculty. Two had applied for the fall and have been asked to submit the appropriate form. The chair had approved temporary graduate faculty during the summer and reminded all that those individuals must reapply every time they have a new contract.
  • The council approved new course SEED 650 - Teaching and Supervision of Literacy in the Content Areas. There was considerable discussion about whether or not to more sharply define the word "literacy," but the council voted to not amend that part of the title. Chair pointed out that all curricular matters are frozen until the database merge occurs.
  • Molseed reported that there are now five cohorts in the area with a sixth one possible in South America. He also pointed out that the College of Education was looking at the culminating event and how it should be shaped.
  • There was considerable discussion concerning the new funding of $500,000. All agreed that something needed to be done about the library but there was no consensus as to what. Chair asked for comments to be sent to him ASAP.
  • Salomon asked about master of liberal arts at BHSU. Chair said he did not know what would happen after the merge but if the department and college were supportive- possibly a letter of intent should be started.

  • Environmental Leadership Program (ELP) Fellowship
    ELP Fellowships are designed to build the leadership capacity of individuals at the beginning of their careers as environment professionals. Those who have approximately three to 10 years' experience in an environmental field are invited to apply for this two-year program. Fellowship activities will offer unique networking opportunities, intensive leadership and skills training, project seed money, support, and "time for personal and professional reflection." Fellows may request up to $10,000 to cover travel and accommodation for four fellowship retreats, access to funding for leadership-building projects, enhancing their public leadership skills, and underwriting activities that build community and strive for tangible environmental outcomes.

  • National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowships
    The NSF is announcing three-year graduate fellowships in science, mathematics, and engineering. NSF aims to ensure the vitality of the human resource base of science, mathematics, and engineering in the United States and to reinforce its diversity by offering approximately 900 graduate fellowships each year. Fellowships are intended for individuals who are in the early stages of their graduate study in science, mathematics, or engineering. Fellowships are awarded for graduate study leading to research-based master’s or doctoral degrees in fields supported by the NSF, including mathematical, physical, biological, behavioral and social sciences; engineering; the history of science and the philosophy of science; and for research Ph.D. degrees in science education. Stipends and allowances will include $27,500 for twelve-month tenure, cost-of-education allowance of $10,500 per tenure year, and a one-time $1,000 international research travel allowance.
    Deadlines are Nov. 4 for life sciences, physics and astronomy; Nov. 5 for engineering, mathematical sciences and geosciences; Nov. 6 for social sciences, computer and information sciences and engineering, psychology and chemistry.   • Jane N. Ryland Fellowships
    The EDUCAUSE grant program is intended to help build future leaders among information technology professionals in the higher education community. EDUCAUSE grants expand opportunities to attend events for those whose institutions find it difficult to support their professional development. Fellowships recognize a combination of past achievement, personal and institutional commitment, potential benefit, and financial need. Awards are made on an annual basis, in amounts that will substantially or fully meet the costs of attending one EDUCAUSE educational event that aligns with the professional needs of the applicant and the strategic directions of his or her institutions. Grant monies are applied first to registration fees, then to transportation and housing costs.

Faculty research funds available - top

The Faculty Research Committee has funds available for the current fiscal year. Write a short (about three-page proposal). Proposal forms are available at the Grants Office, Woodburn 309, or can be printed from the committee website.

It is anticipated that successful applicants will request support for faculty release time, research equipment, travel to research sites or research support for the production of creative work. Preference is given to new applicants, particularly in the areas of education, business, social sciences and humanities.

The next application deadline is today at noon. Applicants are encouraged to contact committee members for advice prior to completing their proposals. The members are John Alsup, Earl Chrysler, Tom Cox, Abdollah Farrokhi (chair), Jim Hess, Kathleen Parrow, Shane Sarver, and Rob Schurrer.
