Board of Regents meet this week - Top

The South Dakota Board of Regents will meet Wednesday and Thursday, Jan. 24 and 25 at the Kings Inn Convention Center in Pierre.

This month’s meeting will open Wednesday with an executive session at 6:30 p.m. in the lower-level conference room. 

 

Thursday’s meeting will begin with an executive session breakfast at 7:30 a.m. in the Lancer Room followed by the meeting of the full board at 9 a.m. in the Crown Room.

The board will adjourn Thursday following a 12-noon executive session in the Lancer Room.

Meeting for prospective student teachers - Top  

Students planning to student teach during the summer/fall of 2001 must attend one of the following registration/orientation meetings:

Spring stock market simulation begins Feb. 20 - Top  

The South Dakota Stock Market Simulation (SDSMS) begins Feb. 20, 2001, and concludes the 10-week trading period on April 27. 

The SDSMS is an educational product 
of the University of South Dakota and Black Hills State University. The simulation is a motivating approach to learning about economics and business. In South Dakota, hundreds of student teams compete each semester in a statewide competition in which they research companies to invest in a $100,000 stock and mutual fund portfolio.  Student divisions include elementary/junior high school (grades 4-8), high school and college.  All 
trading and research are performed online. The top teams in each division receive cash awards and prizes.

The registration fee is $18 per team and includes all teacher materials, a weekly coordinator newsletter and a 10-week in-class subscription to the Wall Street Journal.

The registration deadline is Friday, Feb. 16, 2001. To register online, go to www.sdakotasms.com and click on the registration button. Team identification 
numbers and passwords will be issued and supporting materials will be mailed to the teachers automatically.

The South Dakota Stock Market Simulation is sponsored by the South Dakota Council on Economic Education, the Center for Economic Education at the University of South Dakota and the Center for Economic Education at Black Hills State University.

 

Instructional Improvement Committee has funds available- Top  

The Instructional Improvement Committee (IIC) encourages, through monetary grants, the application of existing knowledge to specific teaching situations to improve the quality of instruction at BHSU. Any full time faculty member, full time adjunct faculty or other full time staff member engaged in student instruction may apply for grant funds administered by the committee. Grant funding will normally be available up to a maximum of $1,000.00 per project. Priority will be given to projects that will have a broad-based, visible, continuing impact of instruction across faculty members and/or disciplines. 

Funds are available for development of materials and methods to improve teaching and learning, equipment to enhance teaching and learning, travel to conferences or

workshops which enhance teaching and learning, and bringing consulting lecturers and teaching specialists to campus to offer presentations to and/or with faculty and teaching-support staff at BHSU.

Proposals for grant funding will be reviewed by the IIC on a monthly basis. The deadline for submission will be the third Monday of each month; a decision will be made as soon as practicable on each proposal.  Ten copies of the proposals should be submitted to the grants and special projects office, W220, or to the chair of the committee, Sharon Strand. Proposals will consist of the proposal and budget outlines following the specified format available at the grants and special projects web page.

Graduate council minutes for Jan. 16 meeting- Top

  1.  Curriculum Proposals

a.  Name change-MS in Tourism/Hospitality Management to Master of Science in Business Services Management.

It was moved and seconded to recommend approval of name change from MS in Tourism/Hospitality Management to Master of Science in Business Services Management.

Discussion followed- the Advisory Board for tourism recommended this and a subcommittee of that board also proposed the name.

The vote was unanimous for recommendation.

b.  Change in hours- EED 511 Guidance for Children should be increased from 2 to 3 hours.

It was moved and seconded to recommend increase in hours.

The state had changed certification requirements and these were incorporated into this course which meant the need for additional time.

The vote was unanimous for recommendation.

2.  Austin Report

In view of the fact that neither Austin nor Farrokhi was present, a motion was made to table until  the next meeting. Motion passed.

The next meeting will be on Tuesday Feb. 20th at 3:30 p.m. in Jonas 309.

Faculty research funds available - Top  

The faculty-research committee has funds available for the current fiscal year. Write a short (about three-page) proposal. Proposal forms are available at the grants office or can be printed out from their  web page.

It is anticipated that successful applicants will request support for faculty release time, research equipment, travel to research sites or research support for the production of creative work. Preference is given to new applicants, particularly in the areas of education, business, social sciences and humanities. A three-hour release time is available for fall of 2001. You can apply now

The applicants are encouraged to contact the committee members for advice prior to completing their proposals. The members are John Alsup, Steve Anderson, Lyle Cook, Tom Cox,  Abdollah Farrokhi, chair; Jim Hess, Kathleen Parrow, Shane Sarver and Rob Schurrer.

The research committee will not provide salary. The committee may approve payment to student or non-student research assistants. Deliver the original plus ten copies of your proposal to the grants office in Woodburn 218 or Dr. Farrokhi’s office in Woodburn 314.

Grants opportunities announced - Top

  • National Science Foundation.  International opportunities for Scientists and Engineers.  Approximately $22 million in funding is available.  Countries with May 1 deadline are Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Venezuela, and Western Europe.

  •   South Dakota Humanities Council.  The South Dakota Humanities Council, the state program of the National Endowment for the Humanities, announces its 2001 Research Program for Humanities Scholars, Grant Writing Workshops, Dakota Conference (co-sponsored with the Center for Western Studies), and Humanities Discussion Program.  The Humanities Council request is limited to a stipend of $2,000 including fringe benefits and $500 in other expenses.  Humanities Discussion and Research for Humanities Scholars proposals have a Jan. 19, 2001 preliminary deadline with a final February 2, 2001 deadline for programs after April 15.  An Aug. 24, 2001 preliminary review helps ready Humanities Discussion, Teachers Institutes, and Media proposals for a final Sep. 7, 2001 deadline funding programs that take place after Nov. 1.

  • The Coca-Cola Foundation Grants.  The Coca-Cola Foundation devotes much of its efforts to partnership in three main areas:  1) higher education; 2) classroom teaching and learning; and 3) global education.  Deadline March 1, 2001.
  • U. S. Department of Energy.  Energy Biosciences Program invites preapplications from potential applicants for research funding in the Biosciences program area.  Average award is $105,000.  Preapplications due March 1; applications due June 13.
  • U. S. Department of Commerce.  Advanced Technology Program.  Approximately $60.7 million in funding is available.  Open through Sept. 30.

  • NEC Foundation of America.  NEC Foundation of America makes cash grants to nonprofit organizations and programs with national reach and impact in one or both of the following arenas: science and technology education, principally at the secondary level, and/or the application of technology to assist people with disabilities.  Deadline March 1, 2001.
