Outstanding alumni honored during Swarm Day activities

Alumni honored during Swarm Day were Robert Phillips, Excellence in Education Award; Michael Sullivan, Distinguished Alumnus Award; Richard Lemm, Special Achievement Award; and Lanny Swisher, Special Service Award.

The Black Hills State University Alumni Association recognized four outstanding individuals at the annual Swarm Days Alumni Breakfast.

Individuals honored were: Michael R. Sullivan, Jacksonville, Fla., Distinguished Alumnus Award; Richard W. Lemm, Story, Wyo., Special Achievement Award; Robert H. Phillips, Lead, Excellence in Education Award; and Lanny Swisher, Spearfish, Special Service Award.

Michael R. Sullivan graduated from Black Hills State College in 1969 with a bachelor of science degree in physical education. After teaching and coaching at the high school level in Arizona and Florida for six years, Sullivan returned to college and earned his master's degree in academic/athletic administration in 1979 from George Mason University, Fairfax, Va. Today, Sullivan is responsible for the day-to-day operations of all sports and entertainment facilities owned by the city of Jacksonville, Fla.

Special achievement award winner Richard W. Lemm graduated from BH in 1969 and went on to flight school at Lewistown, Mont. Lemm's love of flying began when he worked for Clyde Ice, the "father" of aviation in South Dakota, at the Spearfish airport. From 1970 through 1977, Lemm was the flight instructor and program administrator for the Sky Ranch for Boys as well as a charter pilot and various other aviation positions. In 1977 he began a 25-year career with Mini Mart Inc. During that time Mini Mart grew from 25 to 120 stores.

Receiving the Alumni Association's 2002 Excellence in Education Award was Robert H. Phillips of Lead. Phillips earned his bachelor of science in education degree from Black Hills State Teachers College in 1961. He returned to BH and earned his master's degree in education in 1972.

In 1964 Phillips joined the Peace Corps and worked as a teacher for three years in Liberia. After his tenure in the Peace Corps and a year teaching in Minnesota, Phillips returned to the Black Hills where he served the Lead-Deadwood School District for the next 27 years. Phillips retired as curriculum director in 1996. Phillips has long been involved with many community organizations.

The Special Service Award is given to an individual who has contributed long-term service or exceptional effort in a single program or project to BHSU. Recipient Lanny Swisher was born in Aberdeen and attended Groton High School. Swisher was active in sports during his high school days and this carried over to his time at Black Hills State. While attending BH, Swisher played football and baseball and even wrestled his junior year. In December 1972 he married Dnyee Schatz and graduated one year later with a bachelor of arts in art with a history minor.

After graduating, Swisher became a partner in the family ranch near Forbes, N.D., with his father and brothers. For the next 16 years Swisher lived in North Dakota and managed the cow-calf and quarter horse operation there while also working the family farm near Groton. In 1983 while working on horseback at the family ranch, a riding accident left Swisher with a brain-stem injury. Swisher spent many months of rehabilitation in Minnesota and later in Aberdeen before returning home. For the last 12 years Swisher has volunteered his time at the BHSU equipment room in the Young Center.

Amans serve as parade marshals- TOP OF PAGE

Merlyn and Shirley Aman were honored as parade marshals at this fall’s Swarm Day celebration.

Merlyn and Shirley are both former BHSU employees who retired after a combined 50 years of service at the university. Merlyn taught music courses for many years and was director of the music department. Shirley started working at BH as a volunteer in the printing office, later worked in the bookstore, and eventually retired as supervisor of the university printing center.

Today the Amans continue to stay involved in the Spearfish community and especially with the university. At university events, whether it's a theatrical performance, a musical concert, a United Ministries activity or an athletic competition, the Amans are likely to be there.

Nearly every year the couple has "adopted" one or two BH students and spent time getting to know them better and encouraging them to make the most of their college experience. As the Amans began to list some of these students, it was apparent that the connections are appreciated by the students as well.

"We've been a mom and dad to many of these kids and don't mind it a bit. We enjoy it. It's always about the students," said Shirley. "Many of the former students stop to see us when they are back and Merlyn can remember them all.

The couple's confidence in the value and importance of a BHSU educational experience is evidenced by the music scholarship established in their name at BHSU. The couple continues to contribute both time and money to the arts and athletic programs at the university.

The couple has supported the university in a host of ways including baking cookies for basketball road trips, listening to and critiquing student music classes, timing events at track meets, sewing costumes for theatre productions, and helping out at university activities.

Hall of Fame inducts new members- TOP OF PAGE

The most recent Yellow Jacket Hall of Fame inductees are John Houska, Marvin Mirich, Harvey Krautschun, Coleen Letellier, and Doug Murphy.

Five alumni of BHSU were inducted into the Yellow Jacket Hall of Fame during Swarm Week.

Athletes inducted were: Coleen (Herber) Letellier, Class of 1990; Marvin Mirich, Class of 1993; and Doug Murphy. John Houska, Class of 1965, was inducted as a coach and Harvey Krautschun, Class of 1972, as a contributor.

Coleen (Herber) Letellier, athlete, participated in basketball and volleyball at BHSU as a walk-on her freshman year. That was the year three-point plays were initiated in women's basketball - a good thing for Letellier and BH. She scored 123 three-pointers during her college career, placing her second on BH's all-time record books. She remains tied for first place, for the most three-point field goals, six, scored in a single game. Letellier's playing was not one-dimensional. She also holds ninth place on the all-time list for steals with 111. Letellier appears in the top ten in 20 categories on the Lady Jacket's all-time records' list. Letellier was a basketball academic All-American in 1989-1990, and an all-conference and most valuable player. During her junior and senior years, Letellier was an all-conference player in volleyball as well as basketball.

Letellier graduated in 1990 with a double major in elementary and special education. She now teaches special education in Hulett, Wyo. She and her husband David Letellier, also a BHSU graduate, have four children.

Marvin Mirich, athlete, played wide receiver for the Yellow Jacket football team from 1988 through 1991. His career total of 207 receptions was good enough to put him second on the BHSU career-record books. Those 207 receptions translated into 2,763 yards, ranking Mirich third in all-time reception yardage. He was a four-year letterman and co-captain for two years. In 1990 he was a first team NAIA All-American. He also played basketball for two seasons and was named most valuable player for the 1989-1990 season.

Mirich graduated in 1993 with a bachelor of science in physical education. He is currently a physical education teacher and coach at Albin High School, Albin, Wyo.

Doug Murphy, athlete, was a Yellow Jackets quarterback from 1973 to 1976. In his first season Murphy was ranked 16th nationally for passing yardage in the NAIA.

He was also an outstanding golfer and a member of the 1974 BH team, which won both the District 12 and the SDIC championships. During his golfing career at BH, Murphy was a four-time District 12 medallist.

John Houska, coach, graduated in 1965 with a bachelor of science in physical education. Houska has been coaching for 37 years, the last 26 years of which have been spent at Rapid City Central High School. During his tenure at Central, his teams have won the state cross country or track championships 18 times and finished second 10 times. He was named the boy's cross country coach of the year in 1985 and again in 1990. He was also recognized as the girl's track coach of the year in 1991 and the boy's track coach of the year in 1997. In 1996 Houska was inducted into the South Dakota Hall of Fame.

Harvey C. Krautschun, contributor, graduated from BH in 1972 with a bachelor’s degree in social science. Krautschun has been an enthusiastic contributor to the athletic programs at BHSU for many years, both personally and through his numerous business contacts.

He became a Chartered Life Underwriter in 1984 and currently is an insurance and planning specialist with Financial Benefits, Inc. He is a member of the Spearfish Lion's Club, St. Joseph's Catholic Church, the BHSU Foundation and the West River Estate Planning Council. Krautschun is also a trustee advisor Children's Care Hospital and School Outreach.

Krautschun served in the South Dakota legislature for 12 years as the representative from District 31 and held the position of Speaker of the House his last term. Krautschun and his wife Joy, have two grown children.

BH alum named Milken award winner- TOP OF PAGE

Kari Jungclaus followed her heart from her mother's classroom in a small North Dakota town through a college education career and right into the hearts of the students she now teaches. Jungclaus was honored recently as South Dakota's first-ever Milken Award Foundation National Educator Award. (Photo courtesy of the Milken Family Foundation)

Kari Jungclaus, a Rapid City teacher who earned her master's degree from Black Hills State University in 2000, was honored with the Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award recently.

Jungclaus was South Dakota's first recipient of the award and one of three in the state this year.

Foundation chairman Lowell Milken compared the award to winning an Olympic medal or an Oscar. The Milken awards were created in 1985 to reward, retain and attract the highest caliber professionals to schools. The honor comes with a $25,000 award to be used by the teacher in any way they choose.

"Research shows that there is no greater factor in successful student learning than the quality of teachers in our schools; the work of highly regarded educators is rarely recognized," Milken said.

Jungclaus was shocked when the Milken Family Foundation and several state education dignitaries showed up at her school for the surprise announcement of the award. Dr. Tim Molseed, one of her former professors at BHSU who was impressed with the extraordinary quality of Jungclaus' work as a graduate student, said the award designation didn't surprise him at all.

"Kari was an exceptional graduate student. She was very studious, very engaging, a hard worker, not to mention very intelligent," Molseed said.

Jungclaus uses the combination of these qualities along with her exceptional creativity and her compassion for students to be an excellent teacher. Jungclaus provides students with individualized, child-centered instruction, using technology and hands-on materials to convey curricular concepts. She also uses creative methods of teaching, playing the piano and singing songs, rewriting lyrics and reciting poems. Jungclaus said she feels that the most important aspect of being a teacher is building a rapport with students so they feel valued and are inspired to learn. Jungclaus, who has taught for nine years, was also named the 2001 Golden Apple Recipient among elementary teachers in the Rapid City School District. Her fellow Rapid Valley teachers nominated her for her creativity in teaching and her work to establish and build the school's multi-age classrooms.

Other BHSU alumni who have been honored with this prominent award include Kathleen Engle, Class of '80, who received the award in 1997; David Buus, Class of '74, who was honored in 1994; and Thomas Williams, Class of '75, who was named a Milken award winner in 1991.

Jungclaus advises future teachers and all college students to follow their hearts as they choose their career paths.

"Do what you believe in. If you try to do something just because you think that's what people want you to do, it won't work. To be successful do what you believe in."

Jungclaus followed her heart from her mother's classroom in a small North Dakota town through college as she first earned a bachelor's degree in teaching from Minot State and then went on to earn her master's of science degree in curriculum and instruction from BHSU. Jungclaus' dedication and success is now apparent in the hearts of the students she teaches and by the respect of her colleagues as evidenced by the awards she has earned.

Varland graduates to Packers- TOP OF PAGE

By Antonia Kucera, Media Relations intern

BHSU graduate Justin Varland landed his “dream job,” a public relations position with the Green Bay Packers.

Many people never end up in their dream job, but one Black Hills State University graduate recently landed his - on his first try. Senior mass-communications major Justin Varland ended his academic career and began a new career as a public relations official with the Green Bay Packers.

"It is a dream job," said Varland, a Gregory High School graduate. "I have been a Green Bay Packer fan since I started watching football. I always thought that this may become an opportunity for me, but I never thought it would happen straight out of college. This was a job that I looked forward to getting at the age of 30; now that I have it at only 22, I'm really trying to figure out what comes next. Hopefully, I'll be happy in Green Bay for my entire life."

Although Varland did not expect a position to be available, with a little persistence, an impressive resume and a successful interview, he will now go from BHSU’s green and gold to… well, Packers’ green and gold.

Varland's resume has a long list of extracurricular activities and accomplishments from his time at BHSU. He has a double emphasis in his major of journalism and computer publishing. A majority of his time was spent as editor of the Today newspaper and president of the Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity. He has also been involved with the University Programming Team, student senate, general activities fee committee, New Student Days, PREP days, and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, to name a few. He also excels academically and was rewarded as Sigma Tau Gamma man of the year, outstanding student leader, Vice President's Rising Star, eight-time Roskins scholar, three-time Who's Who, a Great Greek, and he graduated with honors..

After being so highly involved in campus organizations on top of a full class load, Varland will be no stranger to the high demands of the public relations field. He will be working 80-hour weeks, and he will also be on the job most holidays since football does not take those days off. Varland is not worried, though.

"It's going to be stressful, but I feel as though I'm ready for it," he said. "I've been working about 70 hours a week throughout college, so what's an extra 10 hours a week?"

Varland has had his own fan club of family and friends to help him reach his dream job. His wife, Chris, graduated from BH with an elementary education degree in 2001 and taught seventh grade science at Dakota Middle School in Rapid City.
"This has been an excellent experience for me and I'm really looking forward to beginning my career in the NFL," he said. "I couldn't have done it without the support of my family and friends."

He also received support from one BH professor in particular: Steve Babbitt, associate professor with the College of Arts and Sciences.

"Steve played a huge role in everything that I've accomplished," he said. "Aside from my family, he is the single most influential person in my life. I owe him tremendously."

The student who is living a dream encourages other students to start their path towards success by joining strong student organizations. "Students need to work smarter, not harder," he said.

Alumnae passes entire CPA exam in one sitting- TOP OF PAGE

Accounting students preparing for the stringent Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam can find solace in the achievement of recent BHSU graduate Traci Cockrell who successfully passed all four parts of the exam in one sitting recently.

Cockrell, who is now an auditor with Ketel Thorstenson, LLP, graduated with honors from BHSU in May 2001 with a bachelor's degree in professional accountancy. Her overall grade point average of 3.96 indicates that she was a hardworking, dedicated student. That work ethic carried over to her professional career and played a major role in her success with the CPA exam.

"Study, study, study," is the advice that Cockrell has for current students or graduates facing the comprehensive and difficult CPA exam. Cockrell said she was intimidated going into the exam since she had heard that the pass rate for those taking the exam for the first time was around ten percent.

"I was confident enough to realize that if I studied hard enough I knew I could pass," she said. "I studied really hard for the May 2002 exam during tax season. I took the exam in May and waited for the results. I received the results in August and found out I had passed all four sections. What a relief."

And what an accomplishment for Cockrell. According to Don Altmyer, associate business professor at BHSU, 80 people took the spring exam that was held in two South Dakota locations. Only two passed all four parts of the exam at that time. The two-day exam is only given twice a year, in May and in November, and includes four parts: auditing, business law, accounting and reporting and financial accounting and reporting.

Cockrell said she enjoyed her accounting classes at BHSU and noted that the business administration classes were a good change of pace and quite interesting for her. She also credits her work experience as being instrumental in passing the exam. As Cockrell began to apply the concepts she learned in class in her day-to-day functions at work, she found success. Her degree and her work experience combined with a tremendous amount of studying proved to be a successful combination for Cockrell.

Cockrell, who is originally from Sturgis, began her college career with plans to graduate with a bachelor of science in business administration with a specialization in accounting but eventually decided to pursue the professional accountancy degree. While attending BHSU, Cockrell was part of a developing honors council group and tutored students at the Student Assistance Center for two years.

"Traci was a very good, hardworking accounting student," according to Altmyer, one of her former professors. "I'm very happy to see her doing well in her career and wish her continued success."

Altmyer lauded the achievement of Cockrell as well as other recent BHSU graduates who have successfully passed the CPA exam. He recalls two students, Dylan Wilde, Class of 2001, and April Trancynger, Class of 2000, who a year ago passed all four parts of the exam in one sitting.

Cockrell plans to continue her work at KTLLP where she works on audits for various commercial, nonprofit and governmental agencies. She recently met the one-year experience requirement and now only has to pass the ethics exam to receive her license.
