WELCOME TO DINING SERVICES BY A'VIANDS !
...Beginning Every Day from Scratch...
'Coming together' as a campus community in the dining room is an important part of college life at Black Hills State University. We work hard to give you a pleasurable dining experience each and every time you visit one of the A'viands Dining Services' venues at BHSU by offering students a quality place to eat 'beginning every day from scratch'.
Our goal is to offer you a large assortment of food for each meal. The Hive features a variety of selections for your enjoyment: hot entrée choices, a full salad bar, fresh fruits and vegetables, deli meat sandwiches, homemade soups, an assortment of pastries, vegetarian dishes, ethnic cuisine, make-your-own waffle bar, an array of desserts (including soft serve ice cream), and a total of fifteen different beverages - a variety of sodas, milk, juices, teas, coffees, hot chocolate and cappuccino.
A'viands kindly asks that each student takes only the amount of food that can be consumed during the student's dining period, and for the student to eat what is taken. Let's work together to overcome the habit of consistent waste.

GENERAL INFORMATION REGARDING
BHSU MEAL PLANS
Per the SD Board of Regents (SDBOR), all students living in the Residence Halls (Pangburn, Wenona Cook, Heidepreim, Humbert and Thomas) are required to have a meal plan. To clarify this point, SDBOR policy requires unmarried students to live on-campus during their first two years of school. Specifically, the policy reads as follows: "During the first two years when they were or would have graduated from high school, all unmarried students who enroll in courses delivered on the main campus for six (6) credit hours or more are required to enter into a housing agreement with the institution unless special permission to room elsewhere is received. (This information is also noted on the reverse side of the Department of Resident Life Agreement for Room and Board Academic Year 2008-2009.)
Meal plans must be used within the semester for which they were purchased; a student will not receive a refund for unused meals. On the other hand, discretionary food dollars carry forward from the fall semester to the spring semester. Any discretionary food dollars unused by the end of the spring semester are forfeited.
Students who withdraw from BHSU prior to the tenth week of the semester will receive a proportional refund for unused meals; withdrawals after the tenth week will receive no refunds. Refunds will be calculated per the approved refund schedules as determined by the SDBOR and distributed by the Student Financial Aid Office. Discretionary food dollars will be refunded at 100% of the unused balance as of the date of withdrawal.
Meal plans may be changed within the first week of each semester by amending the original contract. A "Meal Plan Change" contract may be obtained from Pangburn Cafeteria. After the first week of each semester, a student's choice of plan is final.
A'viands cafeteria dining policy is that all food must be consumed while dining in the cafeteria. Should a student have a situation where he or she cannot eat in the cafeteria, prior arrangements must be made with the director or assistant director. In keeping with our 'think green' agenda, to go containers create landfill waste that A'viands is actively working to eliminate. This policy is posted near the entrance to the cafeteria.
Although guests are welcome at Dining Services, a student may not use a meal plan to pay for their meal. Instead, payment may be made by using discretionary food dollars, Buzz bucks, cash, credit/debit card or check. Meal prices are posted under Serving Times & Meal Prices.
A student's Buzz card is also his/her meal ticket. The Buzz card must be presented each time a student eats a meal in the cafeteria or wherever a student uses discretionary food dollars. Meals on Buzz cards are only valid for the assigned person (a Buzz card cannot be given to a friend or roommate to use).
All meal plans are set for seven days per week with two meals on Saturday and Sunday. Holidays are no exception. A Buzz card can be swiped only once for breakfast, once for lunch and once for dinner, Monday through Friday. It can only be swiped once for brunch and once for dinner on weekends and holidays.
Buzz bucks are dollars placed on the Buzz card as an alternative to carrying cash. Buzz bucks are accepted at all revenue centers on BHSU campus, and many businesses in Spearfish accept them as well.
Nondiscrimination: In accordance with federal law and US Department of Agriculture policy, this institution is prohibited from discriminating on the basis of race, color, national origin, gender, religion, age, disability, political beliefs, sexual orientation, or marital or family status.
