The Student Success Center at Black Hills State University is a student-centered, service-oriented office focused on ensuring student persistence and success. The center provides academic advising and other learning assistance for all students in an effort to facilitate a focused plan of study, sound grades, and a high level of satisfaction with the university experience. SSC staff also collaborates closely with faculty and staff to monitor at-risk students and to share information and strategies related to best practices in advising and study skills development.
SSC staff offers students the following:
- Assistance with general academic advisement
- Assistance with topics related to study-skills practice and personal development
- Assistance in identifying their academic strengths, personal interests, learning styles, and academic and career goals through various valid and reliable inventories
- Assistance designing personal "success plans" early in the semester to clearly define goals
- Follow up on progress throughout the semester to ensure that “success plans” are put into action and monitored regularly
The SSC office serves the following students:
- Students seeking advising assistance and learning strategies
- Students on academic probation
- Students on scholarship
- Students deciding on a major
- All first-time student athletes
