Black Hills State University presents a New Music Extravaganza concert Thursday, Feb. 26 at 7:30 p.m. in Clare and Josef Meier Recital Hall. The Extravaganza features new music composed by, and written for, Spearfish composers and musicians including the premiere of a piece inspired by the science at the Sanford Underground Research Facility.

|A group of panelists, including two Black Hills State University professors, will engage in a discussion on the connection of art and science, a theme that has also been the subject of a statewide traveling art exhibit. The discussion is Wednesday, July 30 at 5:30 p.m. at the Dahl Arts Center in Rapid City and will be held in conjunction with the exhibit’s month-long stop at the Dahl. |

Not even a week into the job and the new Black Hills State University president, Dr. Tom Jackson Jr., encountered a whole different world when he visited the Sanford Underground Research Facility (Sanford Lab) to visit with faculty and researchers about their work nearly a mile underground in the former Homestake Mine near Lead.

Black Hills State University student Rachel Williams, physical science major from Spearfish, and Madison Jilek, recent Spearfish High School graduate who will enroll at BHSU in the fall, were two of the 10 students awarded special scholarships to study underground science for five weeks this summer.

Black Hills State University students in Dr. Wei Song’s integrated marketing communication class this semester had the opportunity to blend theory and their coursework into a practical learning experience. However, their projects also had a larger purpose – to make a contribution to the surrounding community.
