The Black Hills State University’s Chiesman Endowment for Promoting Democracy is seeking applications from pre-service and/or P-12 teachers interested in improving classroom and teaching strategies in the areas of democracy, civic education, law-related education, character education, or the promotion of democratic principles and ideals. Mini-grants will be awarded to individual teachers for use in their respective classrooms. The endowment will award up to six (6) grants at $500 each to individuals who meet the following criteria. 1. The classroom improvement project or activity must focus on the intent of the Chiesman Endowment. The Chiesman Endowment is seeking ways to assist the teacher to enhance current teaching techniques or acquire supportive materials to promote the teaching of democracy, citizenship, and democratic ideals. Grants must be for in-classroom enrichment activities that complement the mission of the Chiesman Committee. Requests for travel are discouraged.
2. A proposal, which will serve as an application, will be reviewed by the Chiesman Endowment Committee for compliance with the intent of the Endowment.
All grant requests will be reviewed and awarded by Chiesman Endowment Committee.
3. As part of the proposal, the teacher recipient will provide a short written report or other appropriate documentation (portfolio, computer presentation, etc.) to the BHSU Chiesman Endowment on how the mini-grant enhanced current classroom learning. A news release to the local newspaper on the mini-grant project will be submitted for public awareness and recognition of the school, class, and teacher.
