Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory –Preliminary Design Report (2011): The National Science Foundation funded preliminary design of a Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL) at the former Homestake Mine. What is known today as the Sanford Underground Research Facility – or Sanford Lab – grew out of the DUSEL Preliminary Design. Volume 4 of the DUSEL Preliminary Design Report, Education and Public Outreach, informed the development of the Sanford Science Education Center.

Content Development Report (2010): Also commissioned as part of DUSEL's Preliminary Design, this report considers what topics and themes related to the science and engineering of Sanford Lab are most compelling and have the greatest educational potential.
