Jump starting South Dakota's economy as the recession ends

 

As part of Governor Rounds’ efforts to jump start South Dakota’s economy, faculty and staff at Black Hills State University are reaching out to South Dakota residents who are facing unemployment to discuss educational and career options. In addition, we are reminding current students that it’s more important than ever to earn their degree so they will be prepared for the workforce as the recession ends.

Do you want to further your education but distance is a problem for you? BHSU offers various Online programs and programs in Rapid City. Industrial Technology classes are being offered in Yankton to meet needs of manufacturing firms.

Interested in teaching?:
Do you have a degree, but are now interested in going back to teach grades 7-12 ? BHSU offers the Project Select certification program in both Rapid City and Pierre, that makes it possible to earn your teaching degree in 10 months.

Educational Outreach has several programs designed to help the community during these economic times.

Educational Outreach extends the resources of Black Hills State University by providing excellent non-credit opportunities for life-long learning for community and professional development, economic growth and personal enrichment.   

Online Career Training Programs

BHSU offers several non-credit programs for those who are seeking career training and development. These online courses range from Business courses to Healthcare careers - from Gaming training to IT and Software Development! Basic Math Concepts

Heading back to college? Need to brush up those math skills?  BHSU has just the tool you need to be successful. The Basic Math Concepts online math refresher course is designed to prepare participants for college math courses. Master the basic concepts of mathematics quickly and easily! The course utilizes an easy-to-use online format with tutorials, assignments and assessments. Topics include fractions, decimals, percents and introductory algebra. This instructor-facilitated course includes an online textbook and 90 days access. Click here for more information. 

 

BHSU has provided services to the community during these economic times.

  • BHSU staff members met with the Isabel School District (closing this summer) faculty about re-careering or graduate school or marketing themselves to other schools
  • Hosted “Today’s Job Search” a workshop presented in conjunction with Department of Labor, Spearfish Office
  • Reviewed resumes for the workshop hosted by WDT, Department of Labor, Career Learning Center and DSS
  • Launched a face-to-face Entrepreneurship in the Arts Professional Certificate Program for artists of all disciplines who seek to support themselves through thier art. These classes provided several budding entrepreneurs with the practical tools needed to manage and shape their emerging businesses. The series was very well received - SDPB aired a story about it!
  • Offered a workshop on web entrepreneurship for people looking generate revenues through the Web
  • Started offering dozens of online, non-credit career training courses in collaboration with Gatlin and Ed2Go in various areas such as healthcare, computers, casino management, and business administration. These courses are meant for individuals interested in acquiring job related skills
  • Industrial Technology staff members are meeting with people from Merrillat and from Sanmina-SCI (roughly 150 and 250) who will possibly be laid-off. A large portion of these individuals will be receiving funds for education. We think our A.S. in Industrial Technology might be a great fit for these folks
  • Hosted an Investment Workshop to advise participants on investment strategies.
  • Met with people at companies in Rapid City who were laid off to discuss the Project SELECT teacher certification program.
  • Many departments held workshops for their senior majors to provide information about graduate school and its preparation — GRE and other testing, applications, reference letters, grades/GPA, costs, impact on marriage/family, etc.

BHSU graduates accepted into professional and graduate schools

Jared Larson, who is graduating with a double major in biology and chemistry, has been accepted to one of the top pharmacy schools in the nation.

Jake Miller, who is graduating this spring, plans to pursue the MD/PhD program at University of South Dakota –Sanford School of Medicine. He was one of only four students admitted to this program this year.

Tara Buehner, Class of ’07, has been awarded the highly competitive Gaylord Ph.D. Fellowship from the University of Oklahoma, which pays all tuition, fees, and travel. The fellowship is awarded to one student each year with three or more years of professional experience in journalism and mass communication disciplines.
