BHSU Honors Program

Welcome to Honors at Black Hills State University.
Honors takes the BHSU commitment to personalized student-centered academic excellence to the next level. Honors offers highly motivated students – regardless of their major field of study – a challenging and enriching education. What's more, we make a difference by motivating all students, faculty, and staff to achieve their best. Whether you are an entering freshman, a transfer or continuing student, or a high school student exploring your future, we invite you to consider Honors.

The BHSU Honors Program is a Member of the National Collegiate Honors Council

The Honors Program
The University Honors Program offers special challenges and opportunities to a select number of academically talented and highly motivated undergraduates from all three colleges of the University. The Program encourages its members to enrich their educational experience, to fulfill their academic potential, and to engage in community service. A major feature of the Honors Program is its focus on smaller classes and colloquia where faculty and students collaborate in a challenging learning environment. Members are also invited to join the Honors Student Organization and participate in its various social functions, including field trips, study groups, attendance at regional conferences, and participation in on-campus academic events.

Mission Statement
The aim of The Honors Program at BHSU is to provide a rigorous and individualized program of study to students with exemplary academic records. This program includes General Education courses, Junior-year Colloquia and a Junior-Senior Honors Project. General Education courses are either designated for Honors students or taken for Honors credit by special agreement with the professor. The program also supports a student organization that plans social activities and community service. Travel for research and cultural enrichment are also part of the mission of the program.
