Debate is often supported as an extracurricular or co-curricular activity of departments and schools inside a college or university. In some instances, debate is linked to the department’s curriculum, as frequently occurs in departments of English, rhetoric and communication, politics, etc. In other cases, debate may be supported as an extracurricular activity available to all students regardless of academic department.
Academic departments or programs may apply for a maximum of $25,000 to pursue one or more one or more of the following strategies:
Establish a debate program at a college or university where none currently exists. Proposals may include support for consultation, educational materials, instruction, and debate tournaments.
Debate Training or instruction. Proposals may seek to provide support for teaching argumentation, debate, and advocacy skills. Projects may include curriculum development, teacher training, materials, and other expenses related to the pedagogy of argumentation, debate, and advocacy.
Host debate tournaments and public debates. Projects may include support for hosting intercollegiate college debate tournaments that students from colleges and their geographic region will attend. The projects may also support public debates involving both students and public officials on important local and national issues.
Travel to public debates and debate tournaments. Proposals may be designed to support transportation, lodging and meals for students who travel to colleges and universities within a geographic region for the purpose of participating in debates.
