            Black Hills State University honored five individuals during the annual BHSU Alumni Awards Luncheon on Friday, September 21, at 12:00 p.m. in the Jacket Legacy room of the David B. Miller Yellow Jacket Student Union. Those honored this year were, left to right: Keith Stover, Class of &amp;rsquo;71, Excellence in Education Award; William &amp;ldquo;Bill&amp;rdquo; Weyer, Class of &amp;rsquo;62, Distinguished Alumnus Award, Johanna Meier &amp;amp; Guido Della Vecchia, Special Service Award; and Jerome A. Greene, Class of &amp;rsquo;68, Special Achievement Award. 
            
        
    


This year's 2012 Distinguished Alumnus Award recipient is Mr. William &quot;Bill&quot; Weyer, class of '62. Weyer earned his degree from BHSU in business education. He received an award from the Wall Street Journal for being the highest scholastic ranking student with a degree in business education or administration. 
After graduating he traveled west to California and found a teaching job in Eureka, where Weyer spent the next 16 years teaching math and science. 
In 1978, Weyer purchased his wife Sandra's parents&amp;rsquo; business Hensell Materials, and took a different career path. Hensell Materials sells building materials to contractors. Over the next two decades, they expanded the business and increased sales.
Weyer said his BHSU education prepared him for both of his careers - teaching and running a business.
Weyer served as chairman of the Board for the Redwood Empire Unit of the California Trucking Association for two years.&amp;nbsp;He also served as president on the Board of the Humboldt Builders&amp;rsquo; Exchange. He was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011, which is given to those who have contributed their skills and expertise to the local construction industry for over 20 years.
Weyer and his wife have been supporters of the Salvation Army, Easter Seals, Soroptimist International, and countless little league teams.

            Black Hills State University honored four BHSU alumni during the annual Alumni Awards Luncheon on Friday, September 9, at 12:00 p.m. in the Jacket Legacy room of the David B. Miller Yellow Jacket Student Union. Those honored this year were, left to right: Darla (Talty) Crown, Class of &amp;rsquo;80, Special Achievement Award; Dr. Barry Jankord, Class of &amp;rsquo;82, Excellence in Education Award; Dr. George Rinker, Special Service Award; and Charles &amp;ldquo;Chuck&amp;rdquo; Sederstrom Jr., Attended, Distinguished Alumnus Award.
            
        
    

This year&amp;rsquo;s 2011 Distinguished Alumnus Award recipient is Mr. Charles (Chuck) V. Sederstrom Jr., attended BHSU and ultimately received his Juris Doctorate degree from the University of South Dakota(USD). In 1968 he began practicing law in Omaha, Neb., with Donald H. Erickson; and subsequently began the law firm of Erickson and Sederstrom. Chuck&amp;rsquo;s area of specialization has been in corporate law with a particular emphasis on health law. He is currently General Counsel to Alegent Health, which is the largest nongovernmental employer in the state of Nebraska, as well as the largest hospital in the state.
Over the course of the past 20 years, he has been very involved with the Salvation Army. He served on the local Omaha Board and for over 10 years he has served on the National Board.&amp;nbsp; He has also served the Omaha Salvation Army in many other capacities: Board Resources Committee, General Chairman of the Christmas Committee, Planning Committee, Chairman of the Advisory Board, and Bequest and Endowment Committee.&amp;nbsp; In addition, he was formerly Chairman of the Combined Health 
Agencies of America.
Chuck is also a very active member and leader in many legal and civic organizations, including American Diabetes Association, American Lung Association, Arthritis Foundation, Boy Scouts of America, Combined Health Agencies Drive of Nebraska, Goodwill Industries, United Way, Rotary International, Chamber of Commerce, and the Omaha Home for Boys. He was President of the Omaha Bar Association from 1984-85.

Miller Yellow Jacket Student Union.  Those honored this year were, left to right: Ron Schuttler, Class of '85, Special Service Award; Dr. Tim Creal, Class of '78, Excellence in Education Award; Dr. Forrest Brady, Class of '72, Distinguished Alumnus Award; and Marla (Hershey) Barnard, Class of '81, Special Achievement Award.
            
        
    

Dr. Forrest Brady, Class of &amp;rsquo;72, received his bachelor&amp;rsquo;s degree in history and math and went on to Creighton University Medical School where he graduated in 1977 as a medical doctor. He completed his family practice residency in Sioux Falls in 1980 and had a private family practice in Spearfish from 1980-86. He currently practices family medicine at the Regional Medical Clinic in Spearfish.
Forrest has served as a clinical faculty member at the University of South Dakota-Sanford School of Medicine since 1978. He has been certified by the American Board of Family Physicians since 1980 and was an instructor of Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) for 20 years and an experienced ACLS provider for two years. He has been an instructor of the Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRS) since 1990 and is currently a provider of Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Advanced Trauma Life Support, and Advanced Cardiac Life Support.
Forrest&amp;rsquo;s leadership appointments include: Spearfish Regional Hospital Peer Review chairman; Spearfish Regional Hospital vice chief of staff; Spearfish Regional Hospital Medical Executive Committee; and Regional Health Physicians Management Committee.
He has been involved in various organizations including: Boy Scouts of America Troop 17, the Spearfish Rifle and Pistol Club, the National Wildlife Federation Leaders Club, and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. He is a professional member of the American Medical Athletic Association.
Forrest enjoys numerous outdoor sports, cooking, dog training, gardening, and reading. He, and his wife, Sharon, have two children, Rachel and Dan.</description>

This year&amp;rsquo;s 2009 Distinguished Alumnus Award recipient is Dr. Michael &amp;ldquo;Mick&amp;rdquo; Dana, class of &amp;rsquo;69.  Dana received his bachelor&amp;rsquo;s degree in science and education from Black Hills State, where he was a member of the baseball and basketball team.
Following graduation, he attended the University Of Nebraska Medical Center College Of Dentistry where he graduated in 1974 with a Doctorate of Dental Surgery.  He returned to Spearfish where he established his dental practice, Dana Dental Arts and now continues to practice with several of his children.
Dana is a member of the American Dental Association, the South Dakota Dental Association, and the Black Hills District Dental Society where he served as secretary-treasurer for many years.
He has been active in several local organizations including serving on the Board of Directors for the City Recreation Committee.  Dana has also served on the University of Nebraska College of Dentistry Dean&amp;rsquo;s Advisory Board.

Mona Chancellor, Class of &amp;rsquo;60, began college with the goal of becoming a teacher. Chancellor taught in South Dakota, Texas, Florida and Colorado for 20 years while raising her children. She also earned a master's degree in reading.
She married Charles E. (Chance) Chancellor, a Denver area businessman who followed his father into the oil business. Chancellor left teaching to become involved in the oil business, and she and her husband took advantage of the opportunity they had to travel around the world. When her husband died suddenly, she was thrust to the forefront of the business and took on the new challenge of running the gas and oil company.
Chancellor is now the president of Chancellor Energy, Inc., an oil and gas exploration business in Golden, Colo. She is actively involved in many organizations in the Denver area.

Tim Penton, Class of &amp;rsquo;80, country manager for Williams International, began working in the oil fields near his hometown of Casper, Wyo. That was the beginning of what would become a long and successful energy career that has included assignments in the western part of the U.S. as well as in several international Locations.
Tim oversee the Venezuela, South America, operations for Williams International, an energy business that produces, gathers, processes and transports natural gas across the U.S. as well as in some international locations.
Tim and his family embarked on a series of assignments which included stays in Kansas, Texas, and eventually Gabon, in West Africa, his first overseas job, and later in Mauritania and Congo. During this time, Penton continued his education through graduate courses in international finance.
Tim has been actively involved in the development and advancement of an English-speaking school in Venezuela, which his children attended. He has helped out in many ways and most recently served as president of the board of education and has chaired many committees. Tim and his wife, Lisa, have two grown children, Molly, who is studying in Madrid, Spain, and Montana, who is currently stationed in Italy with the U.S. Air Force.

Roger Risty, a longtime licensed insurance agent and community advocate, was honored with the Distinguished Alumni Award.
He is president of Risty Benefits Inc. In addition to being a licensed insurance agent, Risty is a registered investment advisor and a series six licensed securities representative. After 30 years in the insurance business, he opened his own agency specializing in employee benefits such as group medical, life, disability, and long term care.
Risty is also an active member in the Sioux Falls Community. He was a member of the Sioux Falls School Board from 1989-2004, serving as president for eight years and vice president for four years. He also served as president and vice president to the Association of School Boards of South Dakota and served as a delegate for the national school board association.
Risty is currently a member of the board of directors for the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce, the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce, the Sioux Falls Community Development Foundation and Big Brothers and Big Sisters. He is also a member of the El Riad Shrine Temple, is a member of the Sioux Falls Downtown Kiwanis Club, is on the board of directors for the Volunteers of America organization and has served as vice president of the Pennington County Republican Party.
Risty is the founder of the President&amp;rsquo;s Bowl, a great high school football event that has raised more than a million dollars since its inception. He is also founder and president of Sioux Empire Safety Village, an organization that brings safety related information and support to all aspects of the community.
Risty has received many awards including the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Sioux Falls Chamber and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Sioux Falls PTA.

            2004 Alumni Award Recipients:
            Terry Ree, Gary Larson, Bruce Williams, Lynette Powell, and Linda Jodie Henry.&amp;nbsp;The BHSU Alumni Association recognized five individuals for their service and achievements.&amp;nbsp;Individuals being recognized are Gary Larson, Rapid City, S.D., Distinguished Alumni Award; Linda Jodie Henry, Spearfish, S.D., Special Achievement Award; Lynette Powell, Hot Springs, S.D., Excellence in Education Award; and Bruce Williams and Terry Ree, Hendersonville, T.N., Special Service Award.
        
    

Gary Larson,&amp;nbsp;a 1972 graduate with a bachelor's degree in business administration, will be presented with the Distinguished Alumni Award. He began his insurance career shortly after graduating from BHSU.
In 1973 he began as an agent at Kluthe and Lane Insurance Agency in Rapid City. Later, Gary and three partners formed Western Dakota Insurers, which has grown into one of the largest insurance agencies in western South Dakota.
Early in Larson's career he obtained the professional and educational insurance designation of certified insurance counselor. He currently serves as president and general manager of the Rapid City agency, as well as oversees satellite insurance agencies in Sturgis and Spearfish.
Larson has served on the American State Bank board and is a past president of Arrowhead Country Club. He is active in the Calvary Lutheran Church in Rapid City and is currently serving on the building fundraiser board. He has served on numerous advisory boards for insurance companies and on the Youth and Family Services and Black Hills Workshop advisory boards. He is also on the BHSU Foundation Board of Directors.
A 24-year cancer survivor, Larson has been instrumental in raising funds to fight cancer. He serves on the American Cancer Society Board of Directors, participates in the American Cancer Society Relay for Life and serves as co-chair of the annual American Cancer Society Golf Tournament.

            The BHSU Alumni Association will recognized four individuals for their service and achievements during an awards breakfast Saturday, Oct. 4, at 8:30 a.m., in the David B. Miller Yellow Jacket Student Union Jacket Legacy Room. Individuals recognized were John Fidler, Palmdale, Calif., Special Aceivement Award; Beth (Gallup) Benning, Spearfish, Distinguished Alumni Award; Linda (Morris) McKay, Belle Fourche, Excellence in Education Award; and Jim Benning, Spearfish, Special Service Award.
        
    

Beth Benning,&amp;nbsp;a 1973 summa cum laude graduate with a degree in business administration, was recently named 2003 South Dakota Finance Officer of the Year. In 1973 Beth became the assistant finance officer for the city of Spearfish and was promoted to municipal finance officer in 1979. She has served as District 10 chairman and president for the South Dakota Municipal League, was a member of the Governor's Tax Advisory Commission, and received the Excellence in Municipal Government Award in 1997.
Beth's other honors include being selected Community Woman of Achievement by Business and Professional Women, receiving the BHSU Outstanding Alumni Award for the business division and the Spirit of Spearfish Award in 1989, and being named one of the Argus Leader's &quot;Leaders of Tomorrow.&quot;
Beth is a member of many community organizations. She also remains involved with her alma mater as a member of the BHSU Foundation Board of Directors and a member and past president of the Alumni Association. She and her husband, Jim, have four children.

<description>Michael R. Sullivan, a 1969 BHSU graduate with a physical education degree, taught and coached at the high school level in Arizona and Florida for six years. After earning his master&amp;rsquo;s degree in academic/athletic administration in 1979 from George Mason University, he started coaching basketball at the college level, eventually accepting the head coaching position at Eastern Wyoming College. Sullivan returned to Florida in 1984 to become the executive director of sports and entertainment for the city of Jacksonville. Today, Sullivan is responsible for the day-to-day operations of all sports and entertainment facilities owned by the city. He administers contracts with organizations including the NFL and the PGA. His work involves coordinating other events such as NBA pre-season games and Olympic trials. In 2000 Sullivan was a member of the host and bid committees for Super Bowl XXXIX.

<description>Langford Palmer of Kellogg, Idaho,&amp;nbsp;distinguished alumnus and a 1973 graduate with a degree in English, became a certified registered nurse anesthetist in 1973. In 1982 he became administrator of the Shoshone Medical Center in Kellogg, Idaho, and five years later he implemented and administered a 15-bed skilled nursing facility within the medical center. Palmer relinquished his leadership role in 1992 but continued to serve as a full-time CRNA. He continues to support SMC by providing quality CRNA services on a regular basis. It was his dedication and loyalty that kept the hospital organization viable. He and his wife, Gloria, have raised a family, and are now enjoying grandchildren.</description>

He holds a bachelor's degree from BHSU and is a graduate of the Colorado School of Banking at the University of Colorado. He has served as chairman of the Northern Rockies Cancer Center and he was a legislative delegate to the American Bankers Association.

Harvest States employees 3,000 people and is the nation&amp;rsquo;s second largest agricultural cooperative in terms of revenues. Prior to 1995 he was group vice president and general manager of GTA Feeds Division of Harvest States, and was director of sales and marketing, regional sales manager and feed consultant with GTA Feeds.

She also has a Master of Arts degree from Colorado State College. During her career, she taught school at the elementary level in McLaughlin, Winner, Rapid City and overseas in Japan, France and Germany. She ended her career as a principal from 1975-1986 at South Canyon School in Rapid City and in Black Hawk. Richey has also established an education scholarship at BHSU.

Dolly served as the state&amp;rsquo;s commissioner of economic development prior to his untimely death April 19, 1993, in a plane crash near Dubuque, Iowa. Previously, Dolly worked for Sen. James Abdnor where he assisted with agricultural and water development issues and was a chief assistant in the U.S. Department of Interior Bureau of Reclamation under the Reagan administration. The award will be given posthumously to his wife, Lane.

Krautschun is a highly respected member of the South Dakota House of Representatives where he serves as vice chairman of the Appropriations Committee. He is also a Charter Life Underwriter with New York Life. Krautschun is past president of the BHSU Alumni Association and is also a member of the Green and Gold Club.

<description>Jim Hood, &amp;rsquo;69
Jim has served on the BHSU Alumni board since 1972, one term as president and three terms as treasurer. He has also been a member of the BHSU Foundation since 1986, serving a two-year term as president. Hood&amp;rsquo;s involvement at BHSU includes serving on numerous search and screen committees and on the Madeline Young Speaker Series Committee. As a member of the Lawrence County legislative delegation, he played an important role in obtaining authorization and funding for the Donald E. Young Sports and Fitness Center. He also serves as legal counsel to BHSU. He was named the 1990 Friend of Education by the South Dakota Legislature, and was also recognized by the Spearfish Education Association and the state elementary school principals association for his support of education.

<description>Paul Dingeman, &amp;rsquo;53
A 1953 graduate, Dingeman pursued a career in business, but returned to the classroom in 1966. He served as principal and superintendent in Jeffers, Minn. From 1971 to 1978 he was principal of the senior high school in Lakefield, Minn. He has served as principal of Belle Fourche High School since 1978, and in 1984 the high school was recognized as one of the top schools in the nation. He holds a master&amp;rsquo;s degree and an educational specialist degree in school administration from the University of South Dakota.

<description>Norbert Weisbeck, '72
Weisbeck, general manager of the Wyoming general office of New York Life Insurance, was selected as this year&amp;rsquo;s BHSC Outstanding Alumnus (now known as Distinguished Alumnus). He graduated from BHSC with a degree in business administration. He was also a defensive back on the Yellow Jacket football team, receiving all-conference honorable mention during his senior year.
In addition to receiving numerous company awards from New York Life, Weisbeck was named to Who&amp;rsquo;s Who in the West, Outstanding Young Man of America, and nominated for boss of the year by the Ogden Chamber of Commerce. In 1985 he was selected as a member of the regional board of directors for the Zion First National Bank system.
