Miller Yellow Jacket Student Union. Those honored this year were, left to right: Keith Stover, Class of ’71, Excellence in Education Award; William “Bill” Weyer, Class of ’62, Distinguished Alumnus Award, Johanna Meier & Guido Della Vecchia, Special Service Award; and Jerome A. Greene, Class of ’68, Special Achievement Award. Keith Stover, class of ’71, earned his bachelor’s degree in education from BHSU and went onto graduate from South Dakota State University with his master’s degree in educational administration.   Stover is currently the president of South Central College (SCC), a comprehensive two-year community and technical college with campuses in Faribault and North Mankato, Minnesota. He has served as president for the past 14 years. Stover noted that his experiences at BHSU were the foundation for his career in higher education. Stover received an announcement from the White House press secretary in fall 2011 that SCC was named one of the two colleges in the nation to receive the designation of a “Right Skills Now” initiative by President Obama. “Right Skills Now” is an accelerated manufacturing program designed to market manufacturing careers, embrace students in the occupation, and implement a national credentialing model. Stover has been a leader in developing relationships with the secretary general of the two-year technical institutes in Thailand in support of the benefits of global education. He served a six-year term on the Faribault Chamber Board and currently serves on the Boards of Greater Mankato Growth and the Southern Minnesota Advocates. Miller Yellow Jacket Student Union. Those honored this year were, left to right: Keith Stover, Class of ’71, Excellence in Education Award; William “Bill” Weyer, Class of ’62, Distinguished Alumnus Award, Johanna Meier & Guido Della Vecchia, Special Service Award; and Jerome A. Greene, Class of ’68, Special Achievement Award. Johanna Meier is known for being one of the foremost Wagnerian sopranos of her generation. She is a graduate of the Manhattan School of Music and began her career at the New York City Opera, which was the start of her major international recognition. She appeared throughout Europe, North and South America in opera, concert, and recital, as well as being the leading soprano at the Metropolitan Opera for 15 years. She was the first American ever to sing the role of Isolde in Tristan und Isolde at the Bayreuth Festival in Germany. As a recitalist, she has appeared at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and others, as well as throughout Europe. Meier has twice appeared on PBS Great Performances, the first time in the title role of Vanessa and later in the world premiere of Dangerous Liaisons with the San Francisco Opera, as well as in the CBS Special Premiere of The Questions of Abraham with Sherrill Milnes. She sang for a Presidential Inauguration in Washington, D.C., as well as at the formal dedication of Mt. Rushmore by President Bush. Meier also acted as Mistress of Ceremonies at the concert celebrating the South Dakota Bi-Centennial in Pierre in 1989. After retiring from her singing career in 1994, she returned home to the Black Hills, where she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from BHSU. She was inducted into the South Dakota Hall of Fame in 2006 for her work in the field of arts and humanities. Meier served as director (1991-2008) of the famed Black Hills Passion Play, an outdoor drama presented for 70 years in its South Dakota and Florida amphitheaters. Each year Meier travels to New York City to give master classes for young singers, and has taught at the Juilliard School, the Manhattan School of Music, Mannes Conservatory, and Ithaca College, as well as privately. In 1998 she founded the Johanna Meier Opera Theatre Institute, which is held annually on the campus of BHSU. Meier teaches the institute, joined by an internationally recognized faculty of former operatic colleagues. She is also currently on the Board of Directors for the Spirit of the Hills Wildlife Sanctuary, Vice-Regent of the Black Hills Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and owner/curator of the Dolls at Home Museum. Guido Della Vecchia began vocal studies at the age of 18 and was trained in radio communication during the Korean conflict. He was selected as one of six to go to Germany where he sang as an entertainer in the Special Services. Following his discharge in Germany, Della Vecchia moved to Italy where he refined his musical art by studying with several of Italy’s foremost maestri at the Cherubini Conservatory and at the Florence Theatre, following which he concertized extensively in Italy before returning to the United States. Beginning in 1961, Della Vecchia made extensive concert and operatic tours throughout the United States, including appearances at Carnegie Hall and Alice Tully Hall at the Lincoln Center. His earliest performances were in the demanding role of Fernando in Favorita and the role of Fenton in Verdi’s Falstaff in a production staged and conducted by the eminent Boris Goldovsky. He and Meier appeared together in both concert and opera before moving to Spearfish in 1984, where he acted in and co-produced the Black Hills Passion Play from 1991 to 2008. For three years he served on the Board of Directors of the Rapid City Symphony and has also served on the Boards of Directors of the Spearfish Arts Center and Matthews Opera House and the Spirit of the Hills Wildlife Sanctuary in Spearfish. Della Vecchia has been active in the inception and promotion of the annual Johanna Meier Opera Theatre Institute held at Black Hills State University. He was granted an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters in 2003 by the South Dakota Board of Regents of Education in recognition of his distinction within his profession, his outstanding contributions to the community of Spearfish, and his dedication to the advancement of the arts in the state of South Dakota. Greene, Class of ’68, Special Achievement Award. Jerome A. Greene, class of ’68, enrolled in the United States Army after graduating high school in Watertown. He then went on to further his education, earning his bachelor’s degree in history education from Black Hills State University and his master’s degree in history from the University of South Dakota. He also completed doctoral work in American History at the University of Oklahoma. Greene has a wealth of experience in careers associated with American History, including most recently serving as a research historian and staff curator for Historic Furnishings at Harpers Ferry Center in West Virginia. Greene officially retired in 2007 but continues his love of writing and making appearances around the nation speaking about history. He is the author of many articles, books, contributed chapters, reviews, and government reports pertaining to Indian-white relations in the trans-Mississippi West and other aspects of American History and cultural resources preservation. Greene has been a part of numerous history projects including completing a special reconnaissance study of Indian-U.S. Army Battlefields of the Northern Plains for the American Battlefield Protection Program and conducting oral history interviews with Pearl Harbor survivors for the USS Arizona Memorial. Greene, Class of ’68, Special Achievement Award. This year's 2012 Distinguished Alumnus Award recipient is Mr. William "Bill" Weyer, class of '62. Weyer earned his degree from BHSU in business education. He received an award from the Wall Street Journal for being the highest scholastic ranking student with a degree in business education or administration. After graduating he traveled west to California and found a teaching job in Eureka, where Weyer spent the next 16 years teaching math and science. In 1978, Weyer purchased his wife Sandra's parents’ business Hensell Materials, and took a different career path. Hensell Materials sells building materials to contractors. Over the next two decades, they expanded the business and increased sales. Weyer said his BHSU education prepared him for both of his careers - teaching and running a business. Weyer served as chairman of the Board for the Redwood Empire Unit of the California Trucking Association for two years. He also served as president on the Board of the Humboldt Builders’ Exchange. He was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011, which is given to those who have contributed their skills and expertise to the local construction industry for over 20 years. The Spirit of BH Award is presented annually to a BHSU student who has made significant contributions that reflect favorably on the University, as well as the community as a whole. Presenting the award to Brummond were (left to right): Bill Collins, president of the BHSU Alumni Association; BHSU President Kay Schallenkamp; and Tom Wheaton, director of Alumni Relations at BHSU. . Black Hills State University presented the 2012 Spirit of BH Award to Alexandria Brummond, elementary education major from Plentywood, Mont., during the annual Student Volunteer Awards Ceremony. The Spirit of BH Award is presented annually to a BHSU student who has made significant contributions that reflect favorably on the University, as well as the community as a whole. Brummond has been very active and involved on campus and in the community all while maintaining an excellent grade point average.  She balances her academic responsibilities exceptionally well, while working several part-time jobs, serving as a student teacher, and maintaining the presidency of the University Programming (UP) team. Brummond joined the UP team in 2008 and served as the lectures chair and the fine arts and music chair. She was named president of the student organization in 2011. She has helped plan numerous activities for students such as: Casino Night, Open Mic Night, and the Haunted House, which was in conjunction with the Props and Liners student organization.  She has served as coronation chair on the Swarm Days Homecoming Committee and has helped plan activities for Swarm Week. Brummond has also been active in transitioning new students to campus life. She has been a New Student Days leader, Green and Gold Days group leader, a Thomas Hall representative for the Residence Hall Association (RHA), and was a former vice president for the Thomas Hall Community Council. In addition to her extensive involvement on campus, Brummond has spent the past three years participating in the Alternative Spring Break. She volunteered at Camp Campbell Outdoor Science Camp in Boulder Creek, Calif., in March 2009. As a cabin leader for fifth graders, she had the opportunity to teach, mentor, and interact with the kids through science experiments, hikes, games, and other activities. Brummond volunteered to work in New Orleans, La., in conjunction with Historic Green for Spring Break 2010. She helped renovate buildings, install radiant heat in individual homes, and helped with cleaning the surrounding area. She was able to make connections with people from around the country and with local community members. Her most recent spring break involved volunteering in various projects at the Natural Tunnel State Park in Virginia. She helped build a blacksmith house, trails, and participated in trail clean-up and painting. Brummond is also the founder of the BHSU Dance Marathon organization, one of her biggest achievements. This organization provides opportunities for students to get involved in making a difference in the region while also providing numerous leadership enhancement opportunities while raising funds to benefit the Children’s Miracle Network at the Rapid City Regional Hospital. This public event is held each year in April which features dancing and games. During the event two local Children’s Miracle Network families are recognized. “Over the course of the last three years I have watched Alexandria become more confident in herself and her abilities, which I attribute to her education at Black Hills State University,” noted Susie Leahy, student engagement and programming coordinator at BHSU. The award is given to honor an alumnus who has attended BHSU within the last 10 years and has distinguished him or herself with outstanding achievements, contributions, and service to society, the community, and the University. Presenting the award to Odle were (left to right): Bill Collins, president of the BHSU Alumni Association; BHSU President Kay Schallenkamp; and Tom Wheaton, director of Alumni Relations at BHSU. The Black Hills State University Alumni Association honored Mike Odle, Class of 2002, with the Young Alumni Achievement Award during the 2012 Student Volunteer Awards Celebration. The Young Alumni Achievement Award is given to honor an alumnus who has attended BHSU within the last 10 years and has distinguished him or herself with outstanding achievements, contributions, and service to society, the community, and the University. Mike earned his bachelor’s degree in hospitality management with an emphasis in marketing. He was a member of the track and field team and competed in the high jump, long jump, and triple jump events. Mike was involved in many BHSU activities including: the president of the Travel and Tourism Club, vice president of the Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity (2002), and the fraternity philanthropic activities coordinator. Mike was also a member of the Swarm Days Committee and the Thomas Residential Hall Committee. He was also very involved in the community, serving as a board member for the Spirit of the Hills Wildlife Sanctuary, where he helped establish the 501(c)(3) non-profit organization status. Mike was also a cadet programs director, a public affairs officer, and a search and rescue team leader for the Spearfish Civil Air Patrol. Upon graduating from BHSU, Mike continued his education by earning his master’s degree in international management from the University of Western Sydney, Australia, and a graduate certificate in legislative programs from Georgetown University. Mike is currently the chief of staff to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Deputy Under Secretary for Natural Resources and Environment. He is responsible for providing leadership and managerial support to the 155 national forests and 20 grasslands within the National Forest System; state and private forestry programs and forestry research and development. He also provides leadership and support in the development of natural resource initiatives. Mike began his career with the Forest Service in 2003 as an assistant public affairs officer in Redding, Calif., stationed at the Shasta-Trinity National Forrest. In this position, he planned and executed complex public affairs communication plans to convey messages to key federal stakeholders. Two years later, he was named the public affairs staff officer of the Shasta-Trinity National Forest, a 2.1-million acre forest. In this position he developed, coordinated, and implemented the public affairs and communications programs with overall responsibility for media relations, community relations, internal information, congressional affairs, the Freedom of Information Act, and the Internet/Intranet web site programs. He managed these programs to promote a positive public image of Forrest Service activities in Northern California, and to effectively and accurately explain programs and projects to the public. Mike then went on to work as the regional public affairs officer for the Bureau of Reclamation’s Great Plains Region with the Department of the Interior before rejoining the Forest Service in December of 2009. He served as a congressional and legislative affairs specialist for the USDA Forest Service in Washington, DC. He was responsible for the overall planning and direction of congressional and legislative affairs activities for the state of Alaska, in addition to national policy issues surrounding water and air resources, climate change, conservation education, international programs, and confirmation of political appointees within the USDA. Mike prepared senior department and agency staff for interaction with congress, conducted congressional outreach, and produced informational materials about the Forest Service. His assignments through the years have included the Navy Operational Support center in Billings, Mont., and the 173rd Fighter Wing at Kingsley Field Air Base in Klamath Falls, Ore. He also provided support for the 44th Presidential Inauguration and the United Nations Peace Support Operation in Bangladesh. Mike is also a captain with the Air National Guard assigned to the District of Columbia Joint Force headquarters, where he serves as a public affairs officer. Mike has received numerous awards including being named as one of 15 young public relations professionals of the year. He is a recipient of the 2002 Colonel Robert ‘Bud’ V. Miller Yellow Jacket Student Union. Those honored this year were, left to right: Darla (Talty) Crown, Class of ’80, Special Achievement Award; Dr. Barry Jankord, Class of ’82, Excellence in Education Award; Dr. George Rinker, Special Service Award; and Charles “Chuck” Sederstrom Jr., Attended, Distinguished Alumnus Award. Dr. Barry L. Jankord, Class of ’82, graduated with honors from BHSU and earned his bachelor’s degree in social science and athletic coaching. While at BHSU he was the student government vice president, Swarm Days chair, and a reserve quarterback for the Yellow Jackets. He went on to study honors philosophy and graduate theology from Catholic University of America in Washington D.C. and earned his master’s degree in educational administration and his doctorate degree in educational leadership from the University of Wyoming. Barry began his career in education at Sublette County School District in Big Piney, Wyo., as a middle school social studies teacher. He also coached seventh-grade football and eighth-grade girl’s basketball. He began working for the Campbell County School District (CCSD) in Gillette, Wyo., in 1990. From 1990-93 he served part-time as the associate principal and part-time as the ninth-grade social studies teacher at Sage Valley Junior High School (SVJHS). From 1993-97 he was the associate principal and activities director at SVJHS. He and fellow BHSU graduate Cliff Hill, Class of '81, helped double the intramural and interscholastic activity participation for Gillette's junior high students in the mid-90s. In 1997, he started work as an elementary principal, serving Meadowlark and Rawhide Schools until 2002. Barry currently serves as the principal for Meadowlark Elementary School, where he provides educational leadership for a school of 330 students. He is also the director of the CCSD Title III and English as a Second Language (ESL) Program. As the director he oversees the staffing and professional development of K-12 English Language Learner (ELL) programs. He has furthered his educational career by participating in numerous teaching and administrative training courses. Miller Yellow Jacket Student Union. Those honored this year were, left to right: Darla (Talty) Crown, Class of ’80, Special Achievement Award; Dr. Barry Jankord, Class of ’82, Excellence in Education Award; Dr. George Rinker, Special Service Award; and Charles “Chuck” Sederstrom Jr., Attended, Distinguished Alumnus Award. Command Chief Warrant Officer Darla J. (Talty) Crown, Class of ’80, enlisted in the United States Army, Women’s Army Corp, in 1973 after graduating from Wall High School. Upon her honorable discharge from active duty, she immediately joined the South Dakota Army National Guard. She earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from BHSU and began teaching math and science at the junior high level. After receiving her master’s degree in education and science, she worked as a counselor, sales and marketing professional, and development officer.  Last spring the South Dakota National Guard welcomed Darla as the first female Command Chief Warrant Officer during a ceremony honoring the transfer of authority. She oversees recruiting, morale, education, promotions, retention and Warrant Officer career development.  Responsibilities in her career have included: being assigned as a personnel officer in a field artillery brigade, instructing leadership and land navigation for the Officer Candidate School, and serving as a Casualty Notification Officer. This year’s 2011 Distinguished Alumnus Award recipient is Mr. Charles (Chuck) V. Sederstrom Jr., attended BHSU and ultimately received his Juris Doctorate degree from the University of South Dakota(USD). In 1968 he began practicing law in Omaha, Neb., with Donald H. Erickson; and subsequently began the law firm of Erickson and Sederstrom. Chuck’s area of specialization has been in corporate law with a particular emphasis on health law. He is currently General Counsel to Alegent Health, which is the largest nongovernmental employer in the state of Nebraska, as well as the largest hospital in the state. Over the course of the past 20 years, he has been very involved with the Salvation Army. He served on the local Omaha Board and for over 10 years he has served on the National Board.  He has also served the Omaha Salvation Army in many other capacities: Board Resources Committee, General Chairman of the Christmas Committee, Planning Committee, Chairman of the Advisory Board, and Bequest and Endowment Committee.  In addition, he was formerly Chairman of the Combined Health Agencies of America. Chuck is also a very active member and leader in many legal and civic organizations, including American Diabetes Association, American Lung Association, Arthritis Foundation, Boy Scouts of America, Combined Health Agencies Drive of Nebraska, Goodwill Industries, United Way, Rotary International, Chamber of Commerce, and the Omaha Home for Boys. The Black Hills State University Alumni Association presented the Spirit of BH Award to Crystal Savage, senior history and mass communication major from Stillman Valley, Ill., at the 2011 Student Volunteer Awards Celebration. The award is given annually to a student who has made significant contributions that reflect positively on the University, as well as the community as a whole. Savage successfully balances academics with volunteer activities and participation in extracurricular activities while maintaining an outstanding grade point average. She has been very active in residence life at BHSU and has held many leadership roles on campus. Savage was president of her residence hall community council and served two years as a resident assistant. She also served on the Residence Hall Association (RHA), was a New Student Days leader, served as the Humbert Residence Hall vice president and was later named president. This past summer, Savage served as a host for the Summer Conferences Program at BHSU and is currently an assistant BHSU apartment complex director and student hall director for the Wenona Cook Residence Hall. Savage planned numerous activities for the residents of Humbert Hall, including Uplifting Valentine Making Night, Spa and Self-Defense Night, and Girls Night In. She also organized and ran the Halloween Safe House, an event for children in the community to come to campus and have a fun and safe alternative Halloween. She helped bring a new program to campus called The Unknown, where residents could anonymously ask the opposite sex any respectful question they wanted. The event also included a sexual safety and STDs awareness program. In addition to her extensive involvement with the RHA, she has also served as president of the Shutterbuzz Photography Club. As president, she organized the Empty Bowls silent auction, where she sold her first photography print, and raised over $800 for charity. Savage has provided countless hours of service to the Spearfish community including her work with the Northern Hills Humane Society. She took photographs of the new animals up for adoption in the shelter and posted them on the Humane Society’s website along with a description about each. Savage was elected by her peers for the title of 2010 Swarm Days Homecoming Queen. During the 2009 Student Volunteer Awards Celebration, she received the Vice President for Student Life Rising Star Award. She was also selected as the first recipient of the Robert J. Courtney Student Leadership Award from the South Dakota College Personnel Association. Marc Tuschen, associate director of Residence Life at BHSU, noted in Savage’s nomination form, “I believe that leadership can be defined by the way an individual lives and the things that an individual does when no one is watching. This relates well with her lifestyle and high morals. She is always mindful of living a well-balanced life and modeling this for her residents. The Black Hills State University Alumni Association honored Captain Brett Theeler, M.D., Class of 2001, with the Young Alumni Achievement Award during the 2011 Student Volunteer Awards Celebration. The Young Alumni Achievement Award is given to honor an alumnus who has attended BHSU within the last 10 years and has distinguished him or herself with outstanding achievements, contributions, and service to society, the community, and the University. Theeler graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in biology and a minor in chemistry. While attending BHSU, he was a member of the Student Ambassadors and the Health Science Student Organization. He was a four-year recipient of the prestigious Joseph F. and Martha P. Nelson Scholarship for science and mathematics majors, and was a recipient of the Nelson Summer Research Grant in 1997 and 1998. Theeler was also a science, chemistry, and math tutor, as well as a mentor for elementary students. As successful on the basketball court as he was with his academic achievements, Theeler served as the captain of the basketball team from 1999-2001 and was named Co-MVP. While serving as captain he was a member of the South Dakota Intercollegiate Conference (SDIC) All-Conference basketball team and was named to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Academic All-American basketball team. In 1999, Theeler was elected the Swarm Days Homecoming King. Upon graduating from BHSU, he was commissioned as an officer in the United States Army Medical Corps and attended medical school at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Md., where he received his doctorate degree. He completed residency training in neurology at the Madigan Army Medical Center in Fort Lewis, Wash. He earned his certification in neurology in Sept. 2009 and served as the chief of neurology at the William Beaumont Army Medical Center in Fort Bliss, Texas from Aug. 2009 - July 2010. Theeler, who is currently a Captain in the Medical Corps, is scheduled to be promoted to Major in May 2011. He is a clinical neuro-oncology fellow at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, and will complete a clinical and research fellowship in neuro-oncology in June 2012. Following completion of the fellowship, he will resume serving in the United States Army as the first and only active-duty neuro-oncologist. He has presented original research at 14 regional, national, and international meetings including the American Academy of Neurology, American Neurological Association, and American Headache Society. Theeler has also published 15 original scientific articles, reviews, and book chapters. He has received numerous awards including the Malcolm B. Miller Yellow Jacket Student Union. Those honored this year were, left to right: Ron Schuttler, Class of '85, Special Service Award; Dr. Tim Creal, Class of '78, Excellence in Education Award; Dr. Forrest Brady, Class of '72, Distinguished Alumnus Award; and Marla (Hershey) Barnard, Class of '81, Special Achievement Award. Dr. Forrest Brady, Class of ’72, received his bachelor’s degree in history and math and went on to Creighton University Medical School where he graduated in 1977 as a medical doctor. He completed his family practice residency in Sioux Falls in 1980 and had a private family practice in Spearfish from 1980-86. He currently practices family medicine at the Regional Medical Clinic in Spearfish. Forrest has served as a clinical faculty member at the University of South Dakota-Sanford School of Medicine since 1978. He has been certified by the American Board of Family Physicians since 1980 and was an instructor of Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) for 20 years and an experienced ACLS provider for two years. He has been an instructor of the Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRS) since 1990 and is currently a provider of Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Advanced Trauma Life Support, and Advanced Cardiac Life Support. Forrest’s leadership appointments include: Spearfish Regional Hospital Peer Review chairman; Spearfish Regional Hospital vice chief of staff; Spearfish Regional Hospital Medical Executive Committee; and Regional Health Physicians Management Committee. He has been involved in various organizations including: Boy Scouts of America Troop 17, the Spearfish Rifle and Pistol Club, the National Wildlife Federation Leaders Club, and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. He is a professional member of the American Medical Athletic Association. Forrest enjoys numerous outdoor sports, cooking, dog training, gardening, and reading. This year’s 2009 Distinguished Alumnus Award recipient is Dr. Michael “Mick” Dana, class of ’69. Dana received his bachelor’s degree in science and education from Black Hills State, where he was a member of the baseball and basketball team. Following graduation, he attended the University Of Nebraska Medical Center College Of Dentistry where he graduated in 1974 with a Doctorate of Dental Surgery. He returned to Spearfish where he established his dental practice, Dana Dental Arts and now continues to practice with several of his children. Dana is a member of the American Dental Association, the South Dakota Dental Association, and the Black Hills District Dental Society where he served as secretary-treasurer for many years. He has been active in several local organizations including serving on the Board of Directors for the City Recreation Committee. Mona Chancellor, Class of ’60, began college with the goal of becoming a teacher. Chancellor taught in South Dakota, Texas, Florida and Colorado for 20 years while raising her children. She also earned a master's degree in reading. She married Charles E. (Chance) Chancellor, a Denver area businessman who followed his father into the oil business. Chancellor left teaching to become involved in the oil business, and she and her husband took advantage of the opportunity they had to travel around the world. When her husband died suddenly, she was thrust to the forefront of the business and took on the new challenge of running the gas and oil company. Chancellor is now the president of Chancellor Energy, Inc., an oil and gas exploration business in Golden, Colo. Tim Penton, Class of ’80, country manager for Williams International, began working in the oil fields near his hometown of Casper, Wyo. That was the beginning of what would become a long and successful energy career that has included assignments in the western part of the U.S. as well as in several international Locations. Tim oversee the Venezuela, South America, operations for Williams International, an energy business that produces, gathers, processes and transports natural gas across the U.S. as well as in some international locations. Tim and his family embarked on a series of assignments which included stays in Kansas, Texas, and eventually Gabon, in West Africa, his first overseas job, and later in Mauritania and Congo. During this time, Penton continued his education through graduate courses in international finance. Tim has been actively involved in the development and advancement of an English-speaking school in Venezuela, which his children attended. He has helped out in many ways and most recently served as president of the board of education and has chaired many committees. He is president of Risty Benefits Inc. In addition to being a licensed insurance agent, Risty is a registered investment advisor and a series six licensed securities representative. After 30 years in the insurance business, he opened his own agency specializing in employee benefits such as group medical, life, disability, and long term care. Risty is also an active member in the Sioux Falls Community. He was a member of the Sioux Falls School Board from 1989-2004, serving as president for eight years and vice president for four years. He also served as president and vice president to the Association of School Boards of South Dakota and served as a delegate for the national school board association. Risty is currently a member of the board of directors for the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce, the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce, the Sioux Falls Community Development Foundation and Big Brothers and Big Sisters. He is also a member of the El Riad Shrine Temple, is a member of the Sioux Falls Downtown Kiwanis Club, is on the board of directors for the Volunteers of America organization and has served as vice president of the Pennington County Republican Party. Risty is the founder of the President’s Bowl, a great high school football event that has raised more than a million dollars since its inception. He is also founder and president of Sioux Empire Safety Village, an organization that brings safety related information and support to all aspects of the community. Gary Larson, a 1972 graduate with a bachelor's degree in business administration, will be presented with the Distinguished Alumni Award. He began his insurance career shortly after graduating from BHSU. In 1973 he began as an agent at Kluthe and Lane Insurance Agency in Rapid City. Later, Gary and three partners formed Western Dakota Insurers, which has grown into one of the largest insurance agencies in western South Dakota. Early in Larson's career he obtained the professional and educational insurance designation of certified insurance counselor. He currently serves as president and general manager of the Rapid City agency, as well as oversees satellite insurance agencies in Sturgis and Spearfish. Larson has served on the American State Bank board and is a past president of Arrowhead Country Club. He is active in the Calvary Lutheran Church in Rapid City and is currently serving on the building fundraiser board. He has served on numerous advisory boards for insurance companies and on the Youth and Family Services and Black Hills Workshop advisory boards. He is also on the BHSU Foundation Board of Directors. A 24-year cancer survivor, Larson has been instrumental in raising funds to fight cancer. Beth Benning, a 1973 summa cum laude graduate with a degree in business administration, was recently named 2003 South Dakota Finance Officer of the Year. In 1973 Beth became the assistant finance officer for the city of Spearfish and was promoted to municipal finance officer in 1979. She has served as District 10 chairman and president for the South Dakota Municipal League, was a member of the Governor's Tax Advisory Commission, and received the Excellence in Municipal Government Award in 1997. Beth's other honors include being selected Community Woman of Achievement by Business and Professional Women, receiving the BHSU Outstanding Alumni Award for the business division and the Spirit of Spearfish Award in 1989, and being named one of the Argus Leader's "Leaders of Tomorrow." After earning his master’s degree in academic/athletic administration in 1979 from George Mason University, he started coaching basketball at the college level, eventually accepting the head coaching position at Eastern Wyoming College. Sullivan returned to Florida in 1984 to become the executive director of sports and entertainment for the city of Jacksonville. Today, Sullivan is responsible for the day-to-day operations of all sports and entertainment facilities owned by the city. He administers contracts with organizations including the NFL and the PGA. His work involves coordinating other events such as NBA pre-season games and Olympic trials. Palmer relinquished his leadership role in 1992 but continued to serve as a full-time CRNA. He continues to support SMC by providing quality CRNA services on a regular basis. It was his dedication and loyalty that kept the hospital organization viable. He and his wife, Gloria, have raised a family, and are now enjoying grandchildren. As a member of the Lawrence County legislative delegation, he played an important role in obtaining authorization and funding for the Donald E. Young Sports and Fitness Center. He also serves as legal counsel to BHSU. He has served as principal of Belle Fourche High School since 1978, and in 1984 the high school was recognized as one of the top schools in the nation. Miller Yellow Jacket Student Union. Those honored this year were, left to right: Ron Schuttler, Class of '85, Special Service Award; Dr. Tim Creal, Class of '78, Excellence in Education Award; Dr. Forrest Brady, Class of '72, Distinguished Alumnus Award; and Marla (Hershey) Barnard, Class of '81, Special Achievement Award. Marla (Hershey) Barnard, Class of ’81, earned her bachelor’s degree in speech communications with a minor in business. While at BHSU, she was a member of the cheerleading squad and created the dance/cheer group - the Golden Sting. In addition, she was selected Miss Black Hills State and represented the University in the Miss South Dakota pageant. Marla has had a successful career in public relations and human resources and has held management and senior-level executive positions at companies such as Duke Energy, Enron, Time Warner, and Comcast. She is currently senior vice president of Human Resources for Fiserv, a Fortune 500 company that delivers integrated solutions to help financial service institutions, insurers, health benefit administrators, and employers manage and profit from information. During her career in public relations, she helped Duke Energy receive the Outstanding Corporate Citizen Award. While serving as vice president of Human Resources at Time Warner, she worked to help the company become awarded as one of the best places to work in Houston for two years in a row. One of the highlights of her career was throwing out the first pitch at a Houston Astros game. Marla also has many years of involvement with non-profit organizations. She is serving as president for Child Advocates and Business Volunteers for the Arts. She is also a board member for the Volunteer Center, United Way, ESCAPE Family Resources, Society for the Performing Arts, and ChildBuilders. She is a graduate of Leadership Houston, which is a local organization recognizing and supporting Houston leaders. Marla also served on the BHSU Foundation Advisory Board from 1994 to 1997. John Karinen, Class of ’58, is a research oceanographer for the Alaska Fisheries Science Center's Auke Bay Laboratories. He researches Alaska’s fish stocks, fish habitats, and the chemistry of marine environments. Karinen did part-time work and collected data for the Dingell Johnson Reports for the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks while attending BHSU from 1953 to 1958. He went on to work at the U.S. Army Medical Research Laboratory-Fitzsimmons General Hospital in Denver and was a research associate at Oregon State University. Karinen has been program leader and program manager for various projects at Auke Bay Labs and was the task leader for work following the Exxon Valdez oil spill. Craig Katt, Class of ’75, is owner and partner as well as president of Solare Solutions, a visual communications company with headquarters in Atlanta, Ga. and a manufacturing site in Wiggins, Miss. The multi-layered company is comprised of a multi-million dollar state-of-the-art signage manufacturing facility; an award-winning creative design team; an animation/content creation media group; and a video systems integration division for hi-tech large-screen indoor and outdoor display systems. Priori to joining Solare, Katt was the national market manager for the international Belgian video display manufacturer Barco after serving 10 years as one of the company market managers for Daktronics. Katt is recognized as one of the industry experts in LED (light emitting diode) technology and is a frequent contributor of technical articles dealing with the technology. Considered a “go-to” by architects and designers throughout the country, Katt’s consultant efforts are manifested in some of the nation’s most advanced large screen video designs. Welsch is a Torrington, Wyo. native that earned a bachelors degree in mass communications/ photography from BHSU in 1982. While attending she participated in the campus newspaper and yearbook. She served as both photographer and photo editor. Welsch was also an accomplished volleyball player and was a four-year letter winner. After graduating, she worked for the Queen City Mail, a local newspaper in Spearfish. She then relocated to the west coast, where she attended Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, Calf. In California, Welsch worked for Fuji Film during the 1984 Olympics and was employed at a commercial photographic laboratory in Los Angeles as manager and in sales. Welsch has had clients in the aerospace, entertainment, architectural, and sporting industries. For the past 12 years, she worked for various industries as a graphic designer and photographer in Denver, Colo. area. In 2005 Welsch was employed at PEN-TAX Imaging in Golden, Colo., as a graphic designer, coordinating visual marketing concepts, graphic design, photography and all printed materials. Linda Jodie Henry, a 1969 graduate with a bachelor's degree in education, is receiving the Special Service Award. Henry taught history, geography and government classes in Lemmon for eight years before relocating to Spearfish. She earned a license as a real estate agent and in 1985 became an owner of Johnson Joy Real Estate. During her real estate career, Henry has served in the capacity of secretary, treasurer, vice president and president of the Northern Black Hills Association of Realtors. She has served on various committees for the South Dakota Association of Realtors, including a six-year term on the South Dakota Realtors Professional Standards Committee. Henry served on the BHSU Alumni Board of Directors, as well as serving a term as president of the Alumni Board during the capital campaign for the Donald E. Young Sports and Fitness Center. John Fidler a former hospital administrator who now serves as a senior consultant for M.L. Schwartz and Associates, says BHSU was the right choice to prepare him for success throughout his career in the healthcare field. John received his degree in chemistry from BHSU in 1960. A four-year letterman in football and all-conference center and middle linebacker who was active in Science Club, Phi Mu Beta, and choir, John was named "Joe College 1959," by BHSU faculty and was one of 13 seniors selected for "Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities."
