Why do I keep getting the same error on all the computers?

If you encounter an error or have a problem in the labs or library, be sure to log out using the Start Menu before switching to another computer or logging back in. If you are not logged out properly, the remote session that has the error stays active, and you will continue to reconnect to the same session.

The remote session will remain active if you:

log in using a different machine while the other machine is "frozen."

power off the machine without logging out using the Start Menu.

use the Ctrl+Alt+Del menu to log off, reboot, or shutdown the machine.

If a session remains active for one of the reasons listed above and you cannot reach the Start Menu to log out, you can call the HelpDesk and a staff member will manually terminate the session. If the session is not manually terminated, it will automatically terminate after 7 minutes if you do not log back in to any thin clients during that time. The 7 minute timer will reset every time a user attempts to log in.
For more information about how the thin clients work, please see our FAQ: What is a "thin client"?

The computer labs in Jonas 201, Jonas 205, and the Library all use "thin clients." The most important distinction between thin clients and a regular laptop or desktop is that nothing you use is stored on the thin client--not even Windows. The thin client only runs a piece of software that connects you to a remote virtual computer.
The differencebetween a thin client and a regular computer can be illustrated by a customerservice scenario. Imagine that you purchased a defective product. Your twooptions are to (A) return the item to the store or (B) call a customer servicehotline. Returning the item to the store is like using a regular desktop; youdeal directly with a customer service representative, and know the rep’s name, what he looks like, etc.
Calling a customer service hotline is like using a thin client, and the thin client is the phone. Though you always use the same phone, you may be connected to any one of hundreds of support reps each time you call. If you are connected to a rude employee, you can simply hang up and call back. The thin clients operate much the same. If you are logged in and have problems, simply logging out and logging back in will connect you to a different computer.

To set up a Speed Dial and/or an Abbreviated Dial Number
(For Speed Dials you are limited by the number of vacant buttons on your phone. For Abbreviated Dials you can have up to “99”. When you set up a Speed Dial, you need to notify your System Admin person (Josh) so that he can change a template.)

Numbers that are set up as Speed Dial Buttons on your phone automatically become an abbreviated Dial Button. I.E. if you have (4) hard buttons programmed as Speed Dials, those (4) automatically become your first (4) Abbreviated Dial Numbers. Therefore under the “Abbreviated Dial Settings” which is below the Speed Dial Setting, the Abbreviated Dials would start numbering with (5).

Problems or Questions?

On and Off Campus L Drive/MacShare FAQs

Adding and editing files works just as it does from any university computer, except, that it is web based and files are not accessed through "My Computer". However, if you are accessing the files from off campus, it is highly recommended that you copy the file to your computer, modify it as needed and copy it back to your folder on the L drive. Simply drag and drop the item from your computer to the folder. Doing so will reduce the risk of any problems or loss of data that may occur if you encounter technical problems.

    On Campus...

If you are accessing the L Drive from an On-Campus computer, logging in with your BHSU Username and Password and it does not show up in My Computer, try the following.
Log off the machine and log back on
        Reboot the machine
If it still does not show up on the computer please open Internet Explorer and go to https://ldrive.bhsu.edu and click the link for L Drive Secure Access over HTTPS.
If you cannot save a file to your L Drive folder, please read the following.
Are you sure you are saving to the correct folder?
If you are accessing it through the web page you must drag and drop your files from your computer to the web folder window.
Still having problems? Check out the FAQ. If you are still have problems, please contact the Help Desk. Be sure to include a detailed description of the problem, your full name, email address and phone number.

    Off Campus...

If you are having trouble accessing the L Drive, ask yourself these questions before going further. If you answer, No, to any of the following questions, please take the proper measures needed.
Do you have your username and password? You must retrieve your username and password.
Are you using your entire email address as your username? In some cases, such as long usernames, your username must be your email address.
Has your instructor requested a folder for you and/or your class? You may not even need access to the L Drive if your instructor does not require it.
Are you clicking on the correct folder? Make sure you are accessing the correct folder.
Is your computer up to date with the latest patches and Service Packs available from Microsoft? Get the latest updates and patches from http://update.microsoft.com.
Are you using Microsoft Internet Explorer as your browser? Browsers like Firefox and Netscape may not allow you to copy and paste items from your computer to the L Drive.
Is your name the same as it was when you first received your L Drive folder? Inform your instructor your name has changed and you are having L Drive problems.
Are you still a student at Black Hills State University? Your account is no longer active. It will be active again when you are enrolled in classes.

    From an Apple Computer
Apple systems are compatible with most systems at Black Hills State University, however, they do encounter problems when accessing BHSU WebDAV folders such as L Drive and the MacShare. Please read the following bulleted items to understand the issue.

On the "Finder" bar, click "Go" and select "Connect to Server..." from the drop down menu. Next, under "Server Address:" type in the following without the quotes: "https://ldrive.bhsu.edu/ldrive" or "https://ldrive.bhsu.edu/macshare", you will then be prompted for your username and password. After entering your information you may be prompted to reauthenticate several times.
Due to the security of the folder structure, you will be asked to authenticate several more times for each folder that is opened and for each file you access, and even for no reason at all. The Apple system will also tell the user that "The user name or password you entered is not valid. Please try again." when the information is in fact correct.
To avoid or workaround these problems please review the following resolutions:

Download and install 3rd party software, Goliath downloadable from www.webdav.org has worked successfully. Run the application, then input "https://ldrive.bhsu.edu/ldrive" or "https://ldrive.bhsu.edu/macshare", without the quotes for the URL and entering your username and password to login.
Or... Instead of accessing it from an Apple computer, it is also recommended that your files be downloaded onto a Microsoft machine, copied onto a USB device or other media, then copy it from the media to the Apple machine. Doing the reverse to post it back to the L Drive.

If you are still having problems, please contact the BHSU Help Desk at 605.642.6580 or BHSUHelpDesk@BHSU.edu.

Does an STF cost you money?
No. The Student Technology Program is funded partially through a state appropriation with the remainder paid from a designated university account for STFs.
This is made possible through the partnership with the State of South Dakota. The Student Technology Fellows Program was designed to provide opportunities for South Dakota students and university faculty to partner in the development and integration of modern technology tools into instruction. This partnership will provide students with special opportunities to develop professional-level skills that will later be applied in the workforce; and it will provide faculty with assistance in the development and use of discipline specific technology needs.
