Problems or Questions?

On and Off Campus L Drive/MacShare FAQs

Adding and editing files works just as it does from any university computer, except, that it is web based and files are not accessed through "My Computer". However, if you are accessing the files from off campus, it is highly recommended that you copy the file to your computer, modify it as needed and copy it back to your folder on the L drive. Simply drag and drop the item from your computer to the folder. Doing so will reduce the risk of any problems or loss of data that may occur if you encounter technical problems.

    On Campus...

If you are accessing the L Drive from an On-Campus computer, logging in with your BHSU Username and Password and it does not show up in My Computer, try the following.
Log off the machine and log back on
        Reboot the machine
If it still does not show up on the computer please open Internet Explorer and go to https://ldrive.bhsu.edu and click the link for L Drive Secure Access over HTTPS.
If you cannot save a file to your L Drive folder, please read the following.
Are you sure you are saving to the correct folder?
If you are accessing it through the web page you must drag and drop your files from your computer to the web folder window.
Still having problems? Check out the FAQ. If you are still have problems, please contact the Help Desk. Be sure to include a detailed description of the problem, your full name, email address and phone number.

    Off Campus...

If you are having trouble accessing the L Drive, ask yourself these questions before going further. If you answer, No, to any of the following questions, please take the proper measures needed.
Do you have your username and password? You must retrieve your username and password.
Are you using your entire email address as your username? In some cases, such as long usernames, your username must be your email address.
Has your instructor requested a folder for you and/or your class? You may not even need access to the L Drive if your instructor does not require it.
Are you clicking on the correct folder? Make sure you are accessing the correct folder.
Is your computer up to date with the latest patches and Service Packs available from Microsoft? Get the latest updates and patches from http://update.microsoft.com.
Are you using Microsoft Internet Explorer as your browser? Browsers like Firefox and Netscape may not allow you to copy and paste items from your computer to the L Drive.
Is your name the same as it was when you first received your L Drive folder? Inform your instructor your name has changed and you are having L Drive problems.
Are you still a student at Black Hills State University? Your account is no longer active. It will be active again when you are enrolled in classes.

    From an Apple Computer
Apple systems are compatible with most systems at Black Hills State University, however, they do encounter problems when accessing BHSU WebDAV folders such as L Drive and the MacShare. Please read the following bulleted items to understand the issue.

On the "Finder" bar, click "Go" and select "Connect to Server..." from the drop down menu. Next, under "Server Address:" type in the following without the quotes: "https://ldrive.bhsu.edu/ldrive" or "https://ldrive.bhsu.edu/macshare", you will then be prompted for your username and password. After entering your information you may be prompted to reauthenticate several times.
Due to the security of the folder structure, you will be asked to authenticate several more times for each folder that is opened and for each file you access, and even for no reason at all. The Apple system will also tell the user that "The user name or password you entered is not valid. Please try again." when the information is in fact correct.
To avoid or workaround these problems please review the following resolutions:

Download and install 3rd party software, Goliath downloadable from www.webdav.org has worked successfully. Run the application, then input "https://ldrive.bhsu.edu/ldrive" or "https://ldrive.bhsu.edu/macshare", without the quotes for the URL and entering your username and password to login.
Or... Instead of accessing it from an Apple computer, it is also recommended that your files be downloaded onto a Microsoft machine, copied onto a USB device or other media, then copy it from the media to the Apple machine. Doing the reverse to post it back to the L Drive.

If you are still having problems, please contact the BHSU Help Desk at 605.642.6580 or BHSUHelpDesk@BHSU.edu.

What type of computer should I bring to BHSU?

BHSU encourages new students to bring a laptop of their own to campus. A desktop computer is acceptable; however, a laptop allows mobility. This gives the students the capability to be connected from any location on campus. Wireless Internet access is available in common areas of the Student Union, Jonas Hall, Meier Hall, Donald E. Young Sports and Fitness Center, E.Y. Berry Library-Learning Center, and the Residence Halls.
Technology has been decreasing in price and has become more affordable. It is now possible to purchase a computer, which will remain functional for your entire college career, at a cost of less than $1,000. When shopping for a computer, keep in mind that any computer meeting the optimal configuration will work well for doing homework and accessing the Internet. A student whose major area of study will be on the Macintosh platform should consider a Mac as a suitable personal computer. A representative from Network & Computing Services will be happy to discuss requested computing needs and current market pricing.
Computers that are connected to the BHSU network are required to have a licensed copy of Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Mac OS X, with the latest operating system patches / service packs and up-to-date antivirus software. Antivirus software is provided at no extra cost to BHSU students.
Computers with the following operating systems are not allowed to connect to the network: Windows 3.1, 95, 98, ME, NT 4.0, Mac OS X 10.3.9 and earlier. Mac OS X 10.4 or higher and Linux distributions are allowed with their latest patches, but may not be fully supported. Also, please note that, though supported for network access, not all University applications have been tested for compatibility with the Windows 7 platform.
The University Bookstore offers special pricing on laptops and desktops that meet the requirements for BHSU. Application software such as MS Office Professional and Adobe products are also available at discounts of up to 80% off the retail price. For more information on these offers, contact the University Bookstore at 605.642.6280 or visit www.BHSUbookstore.com.
The current standard software installation at BHSU is Windows XP SP3 with Microsoft Office 2007 Enterprise.

The Safe Connect Policy Key is part of BHSU's effort to help you keep your computers as free as possible from viruses, spyware, and operating system security holes. Machines protected in this way generally perform much better and require much less downtime due to damage caused by malicious software.
Also, the Safe Connect Policy Key can help to ensure that the average user has the fastest possible browsing experience while connected to the BHSU network. It does this by:

Ensuring that communication from malicious software does not flood the School's Internet connection, resulting in much slower connections for legitimate users.
Restricting certain applications that would otherwise consume an unfairly large share of the School's bandwidth, again resulting in a slower connection for the majority of users.

If you have any questions, please contact the BHSU Help Desk at 605.642.6580 or BHSUHelpDesk@BHSU.edu.

There are two types of remediation available:

Microsoft Windows Patch Failure. If the user's system fails the check for current critical OS patches, the user is instructed to click on the URL for the Microsoft Windows update site and follow the instructions. Additionally, the user is provided the option to download a program that can assist in configuration of Microsoft Windows Automatic Updates.

Anti-Virus/Anti-Spyware Failure. If the user's system fails the check for current anti-virus/anti-spyware software, the user is provided a download either for the software itself or for the current engine and virus definition files.

If you are still having problems, please contact the BHSU Help Desk at 605.642.6580 or BHSUHelpDesk@BHSU.edu.

For Linux users, authentication must be made by logging in via a webpage. The only validation check for Linux systems is the Nessus scan. There is no client which is downloaded to Linux systems. The network connection timer is set for Linux systems; however, there is no icon that can be right-clicked to logout and subsequently login again.

The validation solution will "trap" any Internet browser access and redirect the user to a web page that instructs the user to download and install the validation client known as "Safe Connect Agent".
Once launched, the client downloads the validation rules and processes these. If the workstation fails the test, it is allowed Internet access only to the remediation sites for a period of time. Once corrected, full network access is provided and a timer is set for the connection.
The connection remains intact until the timer expires or the user logs out of his/her Windows session; at that time, the connection is reset and the user must re-validate by launching an Internet browser and logging in.

How does the Network Authentication and Validation system work?

The new computer security system performs the following functions:

    Require authentication to the network.
Validate whether the system connecting to the network meets the minimum security standards.
Quarantines the system until it meets the minimum security standards.
Provides access to the remediation sites. Once the system is validated as "clean," allows access to the network.

Why are we introducing this solution now?
There are over 31 medium or higher rated worms (Blaster, Nachi, Netsky, Sobig) that infected computer systems during the first 6 months of 2004. We did not have a solution that could effectively quarantine systems until proven "clean"; thus, many unprotected systems became infected as soon as they were physically plugged into the network. From investigations on the causes of the problems experienced, it has been determined that the best way to prevent this from happening again is to insure that virus software and OS critical update/patches are current and maintained.
Users who did connect systems that were current with both OS patches and anti-virus software also suffered delays in Internet and other network access due to the excessive traffic caused by the infected machines.

The L Drive is too frustrating for me. Is there any other way to save and transfer my information without using the L Drive?

If you find the L Drive too frustrating to use, you could try the following options:

Go back to basics. Purchase a USB Drive. Copy your information to a USB Drive in a computer lab, take it home and work on it. If you decide you want to put the information back onto the L Drive, bring your USB Drive back to campus with the updated information and paste it back into your folder.

Or

You can attach documents into an email and then address the email to yourself and send it.

If you have any questions, please contact the BHSU Help Desk at 605.642.6580 or BHSUHelpDesk@BHSU.edu. Or submit an online Request Help Form.

To fully resolve the issue, please visit the Microsoft Support webpage. You will need to request the hotfix by using the link. Download and install the hotfix, reboot your PC and you should be able to successfully open Adobe PDF's from the L Drive.

Whenever I open an Office document on the L Drive it asks me for my username and password. Why does it contine to ask me for them?

If you are trying to open an Office document from the L Drive and it repeatedly asks you for your username and password, please note the following:
Microsoft requires that you login with your credentials to open an Office document from an online resource using WebDAV technology. However, instead of opening the file from there, copy it onto your computer and open it. This will ensure that you will have the entire file on your computer and it does come in handy if you are not able to access the L Drive at a later time.
If you have any questions, please contact the BHSU Help Desk at 605.642.6580 or BHSUHelpDesk@BHSU.edu.
