AcV2 architecture, a collaborative design practice in Rapid City, is one of two businesses selected from South Dakota to receive a $1000 Sam’s Club gift card in addition to training through SCORE, a Small Business Administration (SBA) resource partner. The business was nominated by the South Dakota Center for Enterprise Opportunity (SD CEO), located on the campus of Black Hills State University.

AcV2 architecture specializes in adaptively reusing existing buildings and creating infill solutions that catalyze smart growth and renewal. Owner, Patri Acevedo-Riker holds a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Design from the Universidad de Puerto Rico in San Juan, PR and a Master of Architecture from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY. Acevedo-Riker is licensed to practice architecture in the states of South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska, Montana and Wyoming.

“In no other place I resided, have I ever encountered an organization as dedicated to the success of women entrepreneurs as the SD CEO. Simply being considered for this grant is a huge honor for me. My successful nomination process is but one example of how SD CEO champions women-owned businesses in South Dakota,” said Acevedo-Riker

Helen Merriman, director of the SD CEO said, “The grant will provide Patri with access and travel to a two-day educational event designed to help grow her business.”

Double Duty Portable Storage & Movers, LLC in Aberdeen is the other South Dakota business to receive the grant.

The 102 U.S. small businesses were selected based on each business’ need and commitment to ongoing learning and growth in an effort to expand year-round support for small business growth and success. SCORE will sponsor a two-day “High Speed Growth Seminar” especially for the 102 winners, a special training program featuring key executives and workshops on attracting customers, branding, online marketing and developing a sales plan.

The SD CEO is partially funded by the U.S. Small Business Administration. The support given by the U.S. Small Business Administration through such funding does not constitute an expressed or implied endorsement of any of the components or participants’ opinions, products or services.

Spearfish resident Lorrie Keim is not a registered student of Black Hills State University; however, she is often on campus sitting in a classroom discussing Shakespeare, art, and history.
Keim is one of several community members who are taking advantage of the BHSU Visitor Pass program. The Visitor Pass, which is available for $100 per class, allows community members to observe a class on an available space basis. The program allows individuals to be in a class with BHSU students learning from the University’s outstanding faculty and taking part in in-depth discussions without the required assignments, term papers and tests.
Community members may take up to two classes per semester. BHSU courses at the University Center – Rapid City are also available for Visitor Pass attendees.
Ken and Vivian Couch of Buffalo Gap have been taking courses at the University Center for five years. The Couches, who are involved in community affairs, have focused their studies on political science.
“It really has been enlightening to us,”Ken said of the Visitor Pass program. Not only have they enjoyed the learning, they have enjoyed getting to know the students and the professors.
“There are some really, really dedicated students there,” Ken said noting that most of them are working and raising a family while attending classes.
With the Visitor Pass, the Couches are not required to complete the assignments; however, Ken and Vivian choose to participate in writing papers and giving oral presentations.
“The professors are really kind to us old people,” Ken said.“They have made us a part of the class and we appreciate that.”
Visitor Pass registration for spring semester classes begins Wednesday, Dec. 26. To obtain a visitor pass contact Johanna Best at 642-6044.The spring semester at BHSU begins Thursday, Jan. 10.
For more detailed information about the Visitor Pass or to browse a list of spring 2013 courses that are eligible see www.BHSU.edu/VisitorPass.

When the 36th annual Lakota Nation Invitational tips off Wednesday at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center, Black Hills State University alumni Bryan Brewer and Dave Archambault will have front row seats, just as they did at the first tournament they organized in 1977.
The two helped found the LNI, at first named the All IndianTournament, as a way to provide play time for their basketball players. Neitheranticipated the legacy they were beginning.

The conference room in the Black Hills State University Life Sciences Laboratory was turned into Santa’s workshop last week as a handful of graduate students and professors filled 77 stockings of donated items from pencils and calculators to socks, hats and games which were delivered to the Red Shirt community this week.
The stuffed stockings, however, are just a part of the donations that were brought to the community as part of an ongoing tradition started by two BHSU students 12 years ago.

Some of these plastic bags are now hanging from the ceiling of Black Hills State University’s David B.
Black Hills State University art students in Desy Shoenewies’s classes took an interdisciplinary and environmental approach to their latest art project.
The students, elementary education and art education majors, included garbage items in their art as they developed and presented their lesson plans to their fellow classmates. The two art projects, now displayed on the third floor of Woodburn, both use recycled materials and teach a lesson beyond art.
