ARSD 24:15:06:40.  
A K-12 science specialist shall require the following:

    Advanced certification;
    Three years of experience teaching science in a K-12 setting;
    A demonstrated understanding of:
    
        K-12 scientific concepts and pedagogical content knowledge at the depth required for effective teaching;
        The nature of scientific inquiry and the process of learning science through inquiry;
        The historical development of scientific ideas;
        Connections of concepts across grade levels and connections to other disciplines;
        Current issues in science education reform (e.g. measurement of student achievement, legislation, state and national 
        standards); and
    
    
    The study of and actual or simulated experience in the following areas:
    
        Use of findings from science education research to facilitate learning among all students;
        Evaluation of student understanding through written assessments, observation, and student questioning;
        Use of manipulatives and technology across all strands of scientific content areas to build student understanding;
        Use of multiple pedagogical approaches and awareness of potential benefits, challenges, and research base of each;
        Instructional leadership to support the professional growth of other teachers and to provide guidance for parents, 
        administrators, and the broader community.

ARSD 24:15:06:23. 
A birth through preschool special education endorsement requires 18 semester hours of coursework, including a three semester hour practicum specific to birth through preschool special education. This endorsement requires both coursework completion and a passing score on the designated state test. Coursework should address the following competencies:

    Basic knowledge and understanding of growth and development of the child from birth through age eight with emphasis onthe infant, toddler, and preschool child in physical, social, emotional, cognitive, language, and aesthetic areas to include:
    
        Identifying typical and atypical behaviors;
        Identifying individual learning needs, specifying goals relative to the needs, and implementing program objectives to 
        facilitate those needs; and
        Comprehending cultural diversity and its implications, to include supporting home language preservation and 
        promoting antibias;
    
    
    Demonstrated competence in planning and implementing programs with developmentally appropriate curriculum to 
    include:
    
        Use of manipulative materials and play to enhance development and learning; and
        Integrated learning experiences and activities using central concepts and tools of inquiry in all curriculum content areas
        with emphasis in language and literacy, mathematics, safety, nutrition, social sciences, science, music, drama, art, and 
        movement;
    
    
    Etiology and characteristics of disabilities as defined by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act Amendments of 1997 (20 U.S.C. 1400 et seq) June 4, 1997;
    Placement committee process including:
    
        Interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary, and interagency teaming;
        Roles and responsibilities of members;
        Development of Individual Family Service Plan and Individual Educational Program;
        Monitoring student progress toward annual or semi-annual goals; and
        Organization, maintenance, and appropriate use of student records;
    
    
    Curriculum, instruction, and intervention to include:
    
        Developing, implementing, and evaluating a variety of instructional approaches for young children with disabilities;
        Adapting, selecting, and using curricular materials;
        Adapting environment, equipment, and assistive technology devices;
        Developing and implementing positive behavioral interventions; and
        Use of techniques for implementation in home, community, and center-based settings;
    
    
    Screening, assessing, and evaluating young children with special needs, including:
    
        Development, selection, administration, and interpretation of formal and informal instruments for academic, cognitive, 
        communicative, social, emotional, behavioral, psychomotor, and self-help skills;
        Application of assessment information for determining eligibility for special education; and
        Application of assessment information for developing Individual Family Service Plan and Individual Educational 
        Program; and
    
    
    Policies and services related to birth through preschool special education and basic knowledge of state laws, policies, and 
    procedures, including transition procedures.

The endorsement may also be added by the passage of the designated state test without the verification of coursework in the languages of French, German, and Spanish.

ARSD 24:15:06:21.&amp;#160;
A K 12 South Dakota Indian studies education endorsement requires a South Dakota Indian studies methodology course in addition to 12 semester hours in the language, history, culture, and literature of South Dakota American Indians. Study in the developmental characteristics of K-12 learners and a practicum, internship, or student teaching inclusive of K-12 learners is required in addition to the 12 hours, if not previously completed. Verified teaching experience in K-12 South Dakota Indian studies within the five-year period immediately preceding application may be accepted in lieu of the above field experiences at the equivalency of one year’s teaching experience for one semester hour credit for a maximum of three semester hours of the total credit hours required. No state test is required or available to validate this endorsement.

ARSD 24:15:06:18.
A K-12 music education endorsement requires 18 semester hours in music, to include a music methodology course, music theory, history, score reading, conducting, and performance. The endorsement shall be vocal or instrumental based upon the concentration of coursework. Study in the developmental characteristics of K-12 learners and a practicum, internship, or student teaching inclusive of K-12 learners is required, if not previously completed. <description>7-12 Business Endorsement Requirements
ARSD 24:15:06:11. 
A 7-12 business education endorsement requires 18 semester hours in business, with at least six in upper division coursework, to include methodology, accounting, business law, career development, communications, computation, economics and personal finance, entrepreneurship education, information systems, international business, management, marketing and interrelationships of business functions, national policies, ethics and political thinking, office technology, and a business-related occupational work-based practicum. The endorsement may also be added by the passage of the designated state test without the verification of coursework.

    Teacher certification and one year of general classroom teaching, or special education paraprofessional experience, or special education certification and one year of special education teaching experience;
    The passage of the state special education teacher licensing examination; and
    A minimum of a three semester-hour special education practicum under the supervision of a certified special education 
    teacher and university supervisor at each level of endorsement.

A K-12 special education endorsement requires a minimum of 27 semester credits with a minimum of 24 in special education. The credits in special education shall include vocational transition and a special education practicum of two semester hours at the elementary level and two semester hours at the secondary level. The candidate must demonstrate through coursework knowledge and skills at the K-12 endorsement level to meet the Council of Exceptional Children's performance-based standards covering: foundations, development and characteristics of learners, individual learning differences, instructional strategies, learning environments and social interactions, communication, instructional planning, assessment, professional and ethical practice, and collaboration.
