It is not required, but it is important to meet with an advisor should you consider pursuing additional courses or a degree program.

If I am only taking courses through the online BS-Business Administration program or the online Associate’s in General Studies, how do I meet with my advisor and how do I set up an appointment?

This can be accomplished via Email or telephone. Students in the online BS-Business Administration program should contact Kathy Morford (605-642-6212) in the College of Business & Natural Sciences. Students in the online Associate’s in General Studies program should contact Dr. Joe Valades (605-642-6107) in the Student Success Center. If possible, it is still best to meet face-to-face with your advisor.

Will the advising hold be placed back on my file once I register, or will I have some time to drop and add classes as needed?

The advising hold will not go back on your record until the next registration period. You will be permitted to adjust your schedule as needed, but you should continue to seek your advisor’s assistance when making changes. Some holds, however, such as general education holds, will remain in place.

Students who plan to attend these sessions will need to sign up for a session and should watch for emails and posted notices for more information on meeting dates and times.
Online Only - If you are taking a program entirely online then you will work with your advisor via phone or e-mail.

Have an idea of how many classes you believe you can handle and be sure to take into account the number of hours you will be working. Look over the course offerings and put together a tentative schedule. When you build your schedule, take into account the general education courses that are required for the CAAP exam.
The courses required for the CAAP exam should be completed in your first 48 semester hours and include the following:

    ENGL 101 Composition 1
    MATH 102 College Algebra
    ONE OF THE FOLLOWING:

        SPCM 101 Fundamentals of Speech
        SPCM 215 Public Speaking
        SPCM 222 Argumentation & Debate

One Social Science General Education Course
One Arts and Humanities General Education Course
One Natural Science General Education course with Lab

18 TOTAL CREDITS

Recommended steps to prepare for meeting with your advisor.

Log into WebAdvisor. If you have forgotten your WebAdvisor ID or Password, click on WebAdvisor from the BHSU homepage. Next, go to the Students Menu and click “What’s My Username and Reset My Password”. Follow the instructions as given.
Check My Registration Time in WebAdvisor for your assigned registration date and time. Times are listed as Central Time.
Check My Restrictions in WebAdvisor and resolve all holds, if possible. A hold will prevent you from registering on your own.
Review your Program Evaluation in WebAdvisor and/or your status sheet and plan to bring one to the appointment.
Search for course options in WebAdvisor, create a preferred course registration list, and bring that list with you to the appointment.

On campus - Students work with the advisor of your choice BUT be sure to make an official change at the College office so that your advisor will have the authority to release your advising hold for registration. For more information on making an official change, click here.
UCRC - Students who have attended main campus and now wish to complete their program at the UCRC can contact Katie Pavel (605-718-4373) for advising. Such students should continue to contact their primary advisor by phone and/or email and will be expected to do so.
Two faculty advisors will be assigned for students with double majors. In addition, secondary education majors will have two faculty assigned: one for education and one for their content major. Students with certain holds and students in certain programs will have both a faculty advisor and a staff advisor. Go to the first advisor assigned; that person is considered your primary advisor.

On campus – This will depend on the advisor and is generally not the preferred method. You want to establish a relationship with your advisor. Your advisor will be able to make suggestions for scholarships, internships, job ideas, etc. Get to know him or her.

UCRC - Yes, but UCRC students who want Katie Pavel (the academic advisor at UCRC) to advise them by phone should still call to set up an appointment (605-718-4373) so that she can prepare. Katie will also respond to emailed questions as soon as possible (please allow up to five business days for a response).

Online Only - Yes, students in online programs may complete the advisement process by email or phone. For students in the online BS-Business Administration program contact Sheila Aaker (605-642-6702). For students in the online Associate’s in General Studies program contact Dr. Joe Valades (605-642-6107) in the Student Success Center.

Who is required to contact an advisor before being able to register for classes?

Any degree-seeking student with fewer than 60 completed credit hours is required to contact an advisor before registering for classes. Remember that many times your advisor has connections that could lead to your future career. It is a good idea to work with your advisor for your entire college career.

UCRC - Katie Pavel is the general academic advisor at the UCRC and will be listed as the secondary advisor for all students who are designated as UCRC students. She can assist with registration and can answer general education questions. As students complete coursework within their required major, they should contact their primary advisor for information regarding their program, internship opportunities, and career development. Undeclared majors can meet with Katie; once they declare a major, they will have a faculty advisor assigned to them.

Your advisor will help you choose classes that are appropriate and will know the sequence and rotation of classes and also the workload of classes.
This will save you time, money, energy, and strengthen your education. Many times, students take more general education courses than needed but still do not have them in the correct areas. Even though a course may not be a pre-requisite, your advisor will know what course(s) will help you in other courses. This process will also allow your advisor to get to know you well enough to really help guide you in the right direction.
