Approved November 3, 2010
Members present: Jim Hesson, Parthasarathi Nag, Gina Gibson, Sasha Pursley, Chen Wu, Jami Stone, Kathleen Parrow, Adam Bailey, Nancy Roberts, Chris Opitz (student faculty representative)
Called to order at 3:15 p.m.
Approval of the Agenda
Academic Dishonesty Document was added to the agenda
Agenda was approved.
Approval of minutes from Sept. 15, 2010 meeting (sent by e-mail)
Curriculum Proposals (Certificate in Archives, Certificate in Site Interpretation, Certificate in Museums)
Motion/second to re-approve curriculum proposals. Motion Passed
Senate Web Page: The Senate will pursue the idea of putting up a Faculty Senate web page, possibly on the Faculty/Staff web page, where the Senate Constitution and Bylaws are now.
3:30 p.m. to 4:23 p.m. General Education Task Force - (Provost Haney had sent the Senate some General Education and General Education Task Force Talking Points prior to the meeting. Kristi Pearce was also present. Below are some of the points introduced by Dr. Haney and discussed during the meeting.)

Revising General Education is done periodically at most universities. South Dakota is different because it has BOR-mandated General Education Outcomes. Another constraint is the transferability of courses within the SDBOR system.
Different views of General Education are emerging nationally. One of the biggest insights within the last ten years is that General Education is not pre-major courses, but liberal skills that go across all disciplines. Dr. Haney suggested that anyone interested should look at the AAC&U website. BHSU has already made plans to send people to some related conferences.
A General Education Task Force would have a life span of 1-3 years; be made up of eight to twenty members; and include full, associate, and assistant professors from different disciplines, genders, some who teach General Education courses and some who do not. Members of the Task Force need to be people who are willing to do some reading on the issues and participate in the meetings. Dr. Haney would like the Faculty Senate to help select members.
Details of the relationship between the General Education Task Force and the Faculty Senate’s General Education Requirements Committee need to be worked out. Curriculum proposals for new courses would need to go through the regular curriculum process, and ultimately need BOR approval. Other issues that need to be worked out are everything from assessment of the General Education program to pedagogy, creation of a sustainable structure which does not make more work for faculty, and development of a process in which improvement is constantly being considered (“perpetual revolution”).

Before Drs. Haney and Pearce left, Dr. Pearce mentioned the IDEA survey and the workshops for completing the online version of the information forms for it.
After Drs. Haney and Pearce left, the Senate discussed the General Education Task Force information further and asked more questions among the group, which agreed that some work, such as information gathering on General Education programs and data collection seem appropriate for a Task Force; some things, curriculum changes, for example, would need to go through the regular curriculum process and the General Education Requirements Committee.
Other topics (not related to the General Education Task Force):
It was suggested that the Academic Dishonesty Document needs to be stronger, but there was no time for discussion.
Meeting adjourned at 4:50 p.m.
