Doris Phillips retired in 1982 after 30 years of service at Black Hills State University. During that time she was head librarian (1952-1972), library service coordinator (1952-1982) and taught library science (1952-1982).

She was also included in the first edition of the World Who’s Who of Women in Education in 1978, and named South Dakota Librarian of the Year in 1982. She also catalogued and filed the BHSU picture collection in the Leland D. Case Library as a volunteer from 1989-1995.
