The photography department at Black Hills State University is currently exhibiting several BHSU students’ photography.
The 14th Annual Student Photography Exhibit, held in the Ruddell Gallery of the David B. Miller Yellow Jacket Student Union, consists of nearly 100 photographs from over 80 students. The work includes conventional black and white, color photographs, digitally produced photographs and a variety alternative silver and non-silver processes including Lithe prints and Polaroid transfers. Students, faculty, staff, and the public are invited to a closing reception for the photographers in the Ruddell Gallery April 17, from 3-5 p.m.
Prizewinners include: first place - Mandy Detweiller, freshman from Beulah Wyo.; second place - Jesse Hanson, senior from Huron; and third place - Randall Iverson, freshman from Spearfish. Honorable Mentions went to: Brianne Bussell, senior from Rapid City; Michelle Thompson, junior from Spearfish; Jaraka Witte, sophomore from Rapid City; David Harding, junior from Greensboro Md.; Jenna Hillman, senior from Mitchell; Jodi Oliver, senior from Upton, Wyo.; and Bernie Butcher, from Spearfish.
Jenna Hillman and Tara Arsaga, senior from Ipswich, are exhibiting portraits in the second floor student lounge gallery of Clare and Josef Meier Hall on the BHSU campus through May 10. A reception for the photographers is scheduled Thursday, April 10 from 4-6 p.m. in the lounge gallery and is open to the public.
Jesse Hanson is exhibiting photographs made using alternative silver printing processes such as cyanotype, van dyke, and platinum at Roma’s Restaurant in Spearfish during the month of April. The public is invited to attend a reception for this exhibit Thursday, April 10 from 5-7 p.m. at Roma’s Restaurant gallery.
Photography students and their instructor recently had the opportunity to participate in an Alternative Photographic Printing Processes workshop, which was instructed by Shawna Norman, a recent BHSU graduate who is currently a photography graduate student at The Academy of Art University in San Francisco.
Those involved in this seven week workshop included: Dawn Adkins, sophomore from Madison; Joshua Cooke, junior from Spearfish; Lindsay Rose, sophomore from Rapid City; Geneva Kuhn, sophomore from Spearfish; Janci Wenner, junior from Lemmon; Jesse Hanson, Jennifer Carr, junior from Rapid City; Kelsey Hahn and Jerry Rawlings, BHSU photography instructor. A reception for the photographers is scheduled for April 16 from 5-7 p.m. at the Spearfish Arts Center Gallery and is open to the public.
