|Black Hills State University Student Senate members Amanda Scott and Kelly Kirk meet with former BHSU instructor and current South Dakota Legislature Representative Tom Hills, Spearfish, during the 2008 Students in Higher Education Days event in Pierre. Scott and Kirk were two of the six BHSU student senators who participated in the state conference.
Six Black Hills State University student senators recently attended Students for Higher Education Days (SHED) in Pierre. The BHSU student leaders attended meetings with the Board of Regents and Student Federation, testified before the Senate Appropriations Committee, listened to House and Senate debates, heard Governor Michael Rounds speak, and met with various legislators.
Student senate president Kelly Kirk, senior history major from Beulah, N.D., minister of finance Scott Luikart, senior speech communications major from Rapid City, and senators Amanda Scott, senior music major from Custer, Leonard Jacobs, junior history major from Green River, Wyo., Newley Kartak, freshman communications art major from Colome, and Robbie Calvert, freshman political science major from Rockford, Ill., attended the conference.
“SHED provided an excellent opportunity to get involved at the state level.” Kirk said. “The legislators were really interested in what students had to say, and it was a great chance to meet other students from the six Regental universities."
