Black Hills State University faculty and students presented at the annual South Dakota Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (SDAHPERD) conference in Aberdeen.

Dr. Betsy Silva, SDAHPERD College Teacher of the Year recipient and chair of the BHSU Department of Physical Education and Health, presented with physical education students Matt Oliver, Breon Schroeder, and Derek Nelson. Their presentation, “Implementing Wellness Policy: A Success Story,” explained a program initiated between Spearfish West Elementary first- and second-grade students and BHSU students. Their program used activities and games to encourage students to actively move during lunch recess and to help West Elementary implement the nationally mandated wellness policy for K-12 school districts.

Oliver, senior from Rapid City; Schroeder, junior from Spearfish; and Nelson, senior from Rock Springs, Wyo., each received a Gary Bush Memorial Scholarship to attend the conference. Laurel Foster, senior BHSU Spanish major from Platte, also received one of the five Bush Scholarships awarded in 2007. These students received four of the five scholarships awarded annually, which are based on each student’s scholarly capability, commitment to professional development, and potential for future success.

Sandy Klarenbeek, BHSU health instructor, presented “Aligning Health and Reading with a HEAP of Books.” Her research focused on helping teachers make connections between the literature and health goals of education by integrating literature into health curriculum.
