Dr. Laura Colmenero-Chilberg, assistant professor of sociology at Black Hills State University, and BHSU sociology students Anastacia Schulhoff, junior from Caputa; Windy Rottenbucher, sophomore from Spearfish; and Lisa Herman-Spilde, senior from St. Onge; recently attended the annual Great Plains Sociological Society Conference in Aberdeen. Colmenero-Chilberg and Schulhoff also presented work at the conference.

The conference presents the work of sociological professionals and students in the Great Plains region, including South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, and Nebraska. Colmenero-Chilberg’s presented her paper, “Power and Popular Fiction: The Gender Divide,” which focuses on gender inequality in publishing, particularly mass market publishing.  Schulhoff presented her work, “The Global Justice Movement Defined as a Social Movement.”

Colmenero-Chilberg earned her master’s degree in English at Pittsburg State University in 1977 and her Ph.D. in sociology at South Dakota State University in 1999.  She has been a member of the BHSU faculty since 2005.
