Dr. Janeen Larsen, music professor at Black Hills State University, recently received a permanent professional certificate in Piano Pedagogy from the Music Teachers National Association.
Larsen currently serves as chair of the Department of Fine and Applied Arts at BHSU. She is a former president of the South Dakota Music Teacher Association, and is presently the convention chair for the 2007 state convention to be held on the BHSU campus Nov. 1-3.
Larsen is the author of the book Jazz Piano: A Primer for Classical Pianists. She teaches courses in piano, piano pedagogy, music history and advanced theory at BHSU, and performs regularly as both a jazz and classical pianist.
Larsen received her Master of Music degree in both piano performance and musicology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she studied with Gunnar Johansen and Howard Karp. She received her Ph.D. in Music Education from the University of Florida. Larsen has been a member of the BHSU faculty since 1978.
