Sarah Hanify, the new community service coordinator for Black Hills State University, feels camaraderie with the new freshman class since she is just beginning her time at BHSU as well.
Hanify, who joined the BHSU staff as an Americorps*VISTA coordinator in the Community-University-Resource-Exchange (C-U-R-E) Office in August, chose to spend a year as a VISTA volunteer in the Spearfish community because of the beautiful area, the opportunities the community service coordinator position presented, and the chance to be closer to her family in Belle Fourche.
“I can’t think of a better place to spend a year of service,” said Hanify. “In addition to meeting many wonderful people and starting to get service projects organized, I’ve hiked up Lookout Mountain and jumped into a pool on a hike up to Devil’s Bathtub. I’m excited to see what’s next!”
Hoping to continue the great tradition of service projects she inherited from previous VISTAs, Hanify would like to increase awareness and participation at the Volunteer Fair (Sept. 25), Make A Difference Day (Oct. 27), Alternative Spring Break, and other community service events throughout the year. She also wants to get BHSU students excited about volunteering in the Spearfish community and get area non-profits excited about creating volunteer opportunities for students from BHSU.
Hanify hails from Iowa, where she graduated from Drake University in Des Moines with a double major in public relations and psychology.
