| Shane Larscheid, son of Mark Larscheid, and his son Cade welcome all of the participants of the 2013 Mark Larscheid Memorial Tournament.
Nearly 200 people raised more than $4,000 for Black Hills State University scholarships during the annual Mark Larscheid Memorial Golf Tournament and silent auction held earlier this month.
The recent donation from the Larscheid Tournament brings the total scholarship fund to more than $41,000, making it the fifth-largest athletic endowment at BHSU. The scholarship is presented each year to a BHSU male or female track athlete from South Dakota.
“My family and I are delighted at the growth of the tournament in the 13 years we have hosted it,” said Mary Larscheid-Christensen. “Each year we have more participants and feel blessed to have such a great turnout and gathering as we remember Mark and add to the scholarship in his name.”
In August 2000, Mark Larscheid, a longtime teacher and coach at Williams Middle School in Sturgis, died in an automobile accident in Spearfish Canyon. Born and raised in South Dakota, Mark was a standout athlete. He set the South Dakota state high school track and field record in 1969 when he ran the 110-meter hurdles in 14.1 seconds. That record has been tied, but has yet to be broken. Mark graduated from BHSU with a degree in physical education in 1973 competing in both football and track for the Yellow Jackets.
Mark was a loving husband to his wife Mary and devoted father to his three children – Shane, Summer and Slade. He was also a gifted teacher and dedicated coach and friend.
In the fall of 2009, Larscheid was inducted posthumously into the Yellow Jacket Athletic Hall of Fame for his achievements in track and football. Also in 2009, Mary Larscheid-Christensen was inducted into the Yellow Jacket Athletic Hall of Fame for her contributions and support of Yellow Jacket Athletics.
Mary said she loves that there is a scholarship in memory of her husband and she hopes each student who receives a Mark Larscheid Memorial Scholarship appreciates the opportunity to be a student-athlete at such a great University.
