Black Hills State University is giving away a $1,000 scholarship to one lucky incoming freshman during a post-holiday scholarship contest.

To enter the contest students must submit a photo of themselves posing with the BHSU displays at the Rushmore Mall in Rapid City or the Empire Mall in Sioux Falls. All submissions will be posted in the contest album on the Black Hills State Facebook page (www.facebook.com/BlackHillsState). Students should then tag themselves, like the photo, and share it with their friends. The winner will be randomly selected from the five photos with the most likes.

Submissions to the contest will be accepted until Thursday, Jan. 31. Current BHSU students will be eligible to win a $100 gift card to the BHSU Bookstore.

The Rushmore and Empire Mall displays are part of a recent BHSU marketing campaign that also includes an increased online presence and three billboards – one just east of Spearfish, one in Mitchell, and one in between Spearfish and Sundance, Wyo. The campaign features photos by BHSU students Becca Gage and Daniel Merchen, who work in the Marketing and Communications Office at BHSU.

Becca Gage, mass communication major from Sisseton, and Daniel Merchen, corporate communication major from Spearfish, both say it is rewarding to see their photographs used as major components of the University’s marketing campaign.

Corinne Hansen, director of Marketing and Communications at BHSU, notes that having student workers involved in the creating and distributing the marketing campaigns is a win-win situation.
“Our student workers bring creativity, insight and enthusiasm to our marketing and communications initiatives,” Hansen says. “We have exceptional mass communication and marketing programs at Black Hills State University, and we have found it’s advantageous for us to have students involved in all of our communication efforts. The students have the opportunity to work with marketing and communications professionals while building their portfolios and defining their career goals. It’s always gratifying to see them graduate and advance to successful careers.”
