The registration deadline for the DDN Class Start Right: Build Your Own Business has been extended to Oct. 11. The class, sponsored by the South Dakota Center for Enterprise Opportunity (SD CEO) at Black Hills State University, has partnered with Consumer Credit Counseling Service of the Black Hills (CCCS/BH) to offer the class via DDN at the following locations: Black Hills State University, Dakota State University, Northern State University, South Dakota State University, University of South Dakota, and the University Center-Sioux Falls.
Attendees will learn the basics of business start-up including how to: research a business idea; write a business plan; find the money to run their business; select an attorney; seek advice from an accountant and other professionals; understand their personal and business finances; set up effective, organized files; and brand and market their business. The class includes the Start Right: Build Your Own Business book, which was developed by a Black Hills area business owner and expert who has helped more than 650 small business owners start businesses that survive and thrive.
The Start Right: Build Your Own Business class will be taught by Terry Mills, the Education and Community Outreach Manager for Consumer Credit Counseling of the Black Hills (CCCS/BH). He is a certified educator and credit counselor who, since 2004, has taught classes throughout western South Dakota about credit, budgeting, and starting a business. He worked as a lender for 10 years before joining CCCS/BH and has years of experience writing and reviewing business plans. He is also a certified housing counselor. Mills holds a degree in agri-business and commercial economics from South Dakota State University.
The cost of the face-to-face class is $50 and includes the Start Right: Build Your Own Business book. Registration deadline for this class is Oct. 16. The class is also available statewide via DDN for $60, which includes shipment of the Start Right: Build Your Own Business book. Registration deadline for the DDN class is Oct. 11.
