Don Altmyer, professor of accounting in the School of Business at Black Hills State University, was honored at the Stock Market Game Symposium in New York City June 14-16 for 15 years as South Dakota Stock Market Game (SDSMG) coordinator.
Don Altmyer,professor of accounting in the School of Business at Black Hills State University, was honored at the Stock Market Game Symposium in New York CityJune 14-16 for 15 years as South Dakota Stock Market Game (SDSMG) coordinator.
Altmyer was appointed the South Dakota coordinator by the South Dakota Council on Economic Education in the fall of 1997. Under Altmyer’s term as state coordinator, over 15,000 students from South Dakota high schools, middle schools, and colleges have participated in the program. In 2003 he was appointed director of the BHSU Center for Economic Education. The Center for Economic Education provides free teacher training workshops each semester.
The SDSMG is a ten-week trading competition held in the fall and spring academic semesters. Students receive a hypothetical $100,000 to perform online real-time trading in stocks, bonds and mutual funds. The program’s carefully integrated curriculum conforms to state standards in economics, personal finance, math, business, and social studies. Students learn about the importanceof saving and investing for the long term while competing for prizes. The fall 2012 session of the Stock Market Game starts Oct. 1.
