The Johanna Meier Opera Theatre Institute, now in its fourteenth year, will present two different opera performances this year on the Black Hills State University campus in Spearfish.

Major scenes from Ariadne will be performed in Clare and Josef Meier Recital Hall Friday, June 22 at 7:30 p.m. and an adaptation of the opera Falstaff will be performed Saturday, June 23 at 7:30 p.m. Both operas are sung in English and are fully costumed and staged. Dr. Johanna Meier, world famous operatic soprano and artistic director, will present a pre-opera talk for both events at 7 p.m.

Meier collaborates with other opera professionals in providing a variety of professional activities as well as preparing for the opera performances. The Institute offers multi-level instruction for varying stages of performance development. Aspiring opera singers from all over the United States are selected for this unique two-week workshop. Participants in the program arrive at the Institute with their assigned singing roles already memorized.

Stage direction for the scenes will be provided by Bruce Donnell who has directed operas at the Metropolitan Opera and the Santa Fe Opera since 1975. Conductor John Stewart is a former opera professional who has taught voice and opera at the University of St. Louis. Both accompanists are professional pianists from New York City.

Tickets will be available at the door. Cost is $15 for adults and $10 for students and seniors. An onsite buffet dinner is available June 23. For reservations and information, call 642-6420 or contact Terri.Bjorum@BHSU.edu.
