Several Black Hills State University student organizations are hosting a fundraiser to support the Western Hills Humane Society (WHHS). Fundraising efforts began this week and will continue until Wednesday, Dec. 14.
Participating organizations, the 10% Society, Swarm Advertising Solutions, and Chi Theta Xi, will be collecting monetary and material donations for the humane society located in Spearfish.
Monetary donations will be collected through a competition titled, the first annual “College Penny Wars,” which challenges college against college for the title of “Penny War Victor 2011.” Each college is assigned a donation jar in the Buzz Shack, the coffee bar in the Hive at BHSU. Pennies are then collected to earn “points” for each college. To increase the friendly competition, silver coins and bills in designated jars will be deducted from the points for that college. The college with the most pennies collected by Dec. 14, minus sabotage totals, will be the victor and will retain all bragging rights until the 2012 war. All proceeds will be donated to the animal shelter.
Material donations can be placed in collection boxes located in the David B. Miller Yellow Jacket Student Union. The shelter, which is considered a no-kill shelter, is in need of several items including cat and dog food, cat litter, toys, bedding, and cleaning supplies.
If you would like to donate in person or volunteer at the shelter please call WHHS at 642-1576 or stop by at 324 Industrial Drive (out past Walmart).
