Nearly 100 Black Hills State University community members gathered Wednesday evening outside Clare and Josef Meier Hall to share their support and prayers for the Virginia Tech community. President Kay Schallenkamp offered her condolences. Jill Kary, freshman business administration major from Powell, Wyo., represented the student senate and spoke on behalf of the BHSU student population; Mike Isaacson, director of residence life, expressed his sympathy and reassured students that their safety is of utmost concern; and Deaver Traywick, assistant professor of English, read encouraging words on behalf of the faculty. The lighting of the candles was followed by a song from Anverrea Davis, freshman elementary education major from Rapid City. The evening concluded with Donna Trainum, a recent graduate of Virginia Tech and VISTA volunteer at BHSU who was deeply affected by the tragedy, reading some of the wishes expressed by the BHSU community on a banner that will be sent to Virginia Tech.
