Black Hills State University debate teams earned great success at the Flat Land Fiesta meet last month at Laramie County Community College. BHSU’s two novice teams entered the final round unopposed; winning the tournament.
Team members included Amanda Rule, sophomore political science major from Rapid City; Damian Beartusk, freshman from Spearfish; Jay Page, sophomore speech communication major from Spearfish; and Nicole Faas, freshman political science major from Rapid City. Page was awarded fourth-place overall speaker for the novice debate category and made it into the semi-finals for the impromptu category. This was the first debate tournament for Page and Beartusk.
BHSU was the only school that advanced from the semifinal round to the final round. “Closing a final round is a real achievement. It’s something that you expect large schools with several debate teams to pull off,” said Dr. Ryan Clark, BHSU assistant professor and forensics director. “For our debaters to pull this off with only two teams in the tournament and with one team having no prior debate experience is a rare accomplishment.”
The team will travel to Brookings Feb. 24-26 to participate in the Bunny Hop meet. For more information about the BHSU speech and debate program contact Clark at 642-6283 or email Ryan.Clark@BHSU.edu.
