Barbara Zwetzig, director of the Center for Business, Entrepreneurship and Tourism at Black Hills State University, attended a business incubation training event in Philadelphia, Pa., to learn strategies for developing and managing successful entrepreneur support programs.
More than 115 business incubation and economic development professionals from around the world attended the National Business Incubation Association (NBIA) 20th Fall Training Institute.
Zwetzig attended two workshops titled “Serving Client Companies” and “Designing and Constructing Mixed-Use and Biotechnology Incubators,” completing her requirements for NBIA certification.
Business incubation programs, such as the proposed Northern Black Hills Business Incubator BHSU, catalyze the process of starting and growing companies by providing entrepreneurs with the expertise, networks and tools they need to make their ventures successful. NBIA estimates that in 2005 alone, North American incubators assisted more than 27,000 start-up companies that provided full-time employment for more than 100,000 workers and generated annual revenue of more than $17 billion.
BHSU received an Economic Development Administration grant this year to conduct a community needs assessment and create the business plan for the proposed business incubator.
